About this listen
Shortlisted for the Young Telegraph, 1995
Winner of the Fully Booked Award, 1995.
"Where do baby apes sleep? In apricots! I'm Elsa, and that's one of my jokes (I tell LOTS of jokes and I'm going to be a big star one day). I do my best to cheer my family up - but no one seems to laugh much any more. Not since we lost our lovely house and had to move into a bed and breakfast hotel."
When Elsa's stepfather loses his job, the family becomes homeless, and they are forced to move into the seedy Royal Hotel, where Elsa, her mum, stepdad Mack, little sister Pippa, and baby Hank the Hunk are all crammed together in one room. Everyone gets on each other's nerves, and to try and make her family laugh, Elsa cracks endless jokes. She dreams of being a famous comedian when she is older, and appearing on TV. But when disaster strikes at the hotel, Elsa gets her chance to be a real star...

Good book
This is a really good book written by Jacqueline Wilson. It’s really funny and it has lots of jokes in it. The main girl is called Elsa and the book is about her stepdad, her mum, little sister Pippa and her baby brother Hank. It is a good book I recommend listening to it while doing some thing else. You should definitely read it

Wow!!
Seriously - I don't give full marks lightly!
I'm an adult Jacqueline Wilson fan and LOVED this recording. Josie Lawrence is a genius with the narration, with so many different voices you could almost believe there is a whole cast reading it! A must have for all fans.

The Bed And Breakfast Star
I loved this book it was really good 👍
But I was listening to this in the night when I was in bed and when Elsa shouts fire! I had to turn it down so much because the narrator actually shouted! But good story 👍

Very good
It’s an interesting and funny story and it’s easy to listen to. I’d say it’s for 8 to 12 year olds. I like listening to it when I can’t fall asleep at night. The voice suits the story very well also. I recommend getting it!
