Summary
The wonderfully nostalgic, vivid and compelling new novel from the Sunday Times top-five best-selling author of A Loving Family.
From the age of eight, 16-year-old Charity Crosse has been living rough with her grandfather and begging on the streets. When her grandfather passes away, Charity is helped by a kindly doctor who introduces her to bookseller Jethro Dawkins.
Jethro takes Charity in to help in his bookshop and keep house in their one room behind the shop. Charity sleeps under the counter and is not well treated, but Jethro instills in her the love of books that began when her grandmother taught her to read. And she starts to hope for a better future for herself.
But Jethro dies unexpectedly, and Charity is faced with eviction when the rent is raised by the unscrupulous landlord. Must Charity give up her dream of running the bookshop herself, and, worse, be forced to return to the streets...?

Lovely story well narrated
I don’t usually get into a book so quickly but this story had me hooked from the beginning. Loved listening to Annie Aldington narrating this lovely story from start to finish.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Easy listening.
Another hit from Dilly Court. Engaging, interesting and beautifully narrated. I shall be disappointed once I have exhausted all of Dilly, 's novels.

Brilliant!
I really enjoyed listening to this story. Dilly Court always writes interesting stories about the lives of different people- those who have little and those who have plenty and it is lovely when the ending is a happy one. I also enjoy listening to Annie Aldington’s reading - all those different accents!
