Brilliant

Not quite enough difference in the characters voices, amazing world building and complex characters I cannot wait for the next instalment. This is definitely a series worth investing in

A grimdarker sequel

A worthy and grimdarker (feeding the half daughter) sequel to The Lost War. As an Edinburgh local I recognised some of the (legally) totally fictional places in the story and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There's a load more inner thoughts dialogue here and much less "road movie" adventures. The main characters are flawed, error prone and that feels right. I'd moved my "favourite character" loyalty long before the end.

The new narrator is the author, thankfully Justin Lee Anderson can narate. It doesn't sound like a vanity project.

Two notes though. Firstly, despite the recap, I struggled to remember everything salient from book one so if you can read both fairly close together then do so. Secondly, The Bitter Crown finishes on a cliffhanger and I suspect the next book will pick up one the immediate aftermath with another memory test!

Captivating listen!

A captivating listen with no cliche characters and no obvious storylines. Very well performed, where individuals are easily identifiable. Well done Justin! I eagerly await the next in the saga.

No loss of pace

I listened to this immediately following book 1 and found that, for me, there was no loss in delivery considering the change of narrator; the latter being brought to life by the author. In fact, considering there were possibly editing issues (not many I might add) to the first audiobook, I would suggest this one flows much easier. Not an easy task for the author, so well done.
As for the story itself, I do not believe this would be a stand alone volume, and any reader/listener would benefit from having consumed the first book.
Lots going on, it's not difficult to follow, nor did I find it bland. I eagerly await book 3 to see how it all comes together.

It keeps getting better

I really enjoyed this second book and can't wait for more. The twists and turns the story is taking are fantastic. The characters are developing almost as quickly as the story is being told which is fairly quick. I'm really enjoying this world you've created. Thanks. More please.

Great development of an already interesting story.

The further I got into this book the more I couldn't pull myself away, the characters are well tounded and have developed through the books with new highs, lows, conflicts and twists in the story. well written, easy to follow and distinguish characters and plot points. very much looking forward to the next in the series.

I will admit coming straight from the first audio book to this one I was at first jolted by the change in narrator, but it didn't take me long to fall back into the world Anderson has created.

Excellent characters, world-building and pacing

Absolutely loved this book. The first was very good but this took it to a whole new level. One of the best new fantasy books I've read in many years

Good story

This book was only spoiled slightly with too many swear words - but that’s only my opinion and dislike
