About this listen

When a prophesy brings war to the Land of the Black Hills, Keeley Smythe must join forces with a clan of mountain warriors who are really centaurs in a thrilling new fantasy romance series from New York Times best-selling author G.A. Aiken.

The Old King Is Dead

With the demise of the Old King, there's a prophesy that a queen will ascend to the throne of the Black Hills. Bad news for the king's sons, who are prepared to defend their birthright against all comers. But for blacksmith Keeley Smythe, war is great for business. Until it looks like the chosen queen will be Beatrix, her younger sister. Now it's all Keeley can do to protect her family from the enraged royals.

Luckily, Keeley doesn't have to fight alone. Because thundering to her aid comes a clan of kilt-wearing mountain warriors called the Amichai. Not the most socially adept group, but soldiers have never bothered Keeley, and rough, gruff Caid, actually seems to respect her. A good thing because the fierce warrior will be by her side for a much longer ride than any prophesy ever envisioned.

LOVED it

After reading the blurb I wasn't completely sold but decided to give it a try anyway and I'm so happy I did! I have loved the storyline from start to finish, the characters are brilliant and I found myself invested quickly. Well worth a read and I can't wait to start the next in the saga!

Fantasy, less typical heroes, light, enjoyed

Multiple female leads kicking butt. Fantasy world- humans, centaurs, dwarves, daemon wolves, dragon. Fighting. Romance. Humour. Good fighting evil. I enjoyed it. Story dragged me in. I liked the characters.

The blacksmith queen

Loved this, I couldn’t help but laugh with all the siblings banter and the crazy uncles antics. The 3rd person narrative did make it hard to follow at times as there were so many characters but i did enjoy this story

Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this audio book, easy listening and good story, the narrator was excellent.
The only criticism from me was some of the language, it was out of place and not needed to get the point across, I’m by no means a prude but it just seemed unnecessary and added nothing.

Excellent listen!

Really enjoyed listening to this story. What I enjoyed most? The family of the heroine ís a strong contender. Also the "air" of the story. In my opinion the author manages to take common themes and bring them around again, even better with subtle changes. Loved every minute of it.

can't understand the glowing reviews

imo, this was a mess. Far too many perspectives without any indication who's speaking. narrators voice is the same for practically all (aside from when she pronounces British vocab). It seems like it would've been a great story, but it's doing way too much at once. had to give up in chapter 8. DNF

The performance was honestly almost unbearable. The story didn’t help

The performance was incredibly poor, the voice actor would get voiced mixed up pretty regularly for me to notice, couldn’t pronounce words that I assume was supposed to sound English. The story was average, I felt it was so bad that it easily good at parts and so bad it was bad. So I opted for the middle. I will not be continuing the series.
