About this listen
A Thriller Award winner, Best Paperback Original Novel.
For three years, Detective Jude Fontaine was kept from the outside world. Held in an underground cell, her only contact was with her sadistic captor, and reading his face was her entire existence. Learning his every line, every movement, and every flicker of thought is what kept her alive.
After her experience with isolation and torture, she is left with a fierce desire for justice—and a heightened ability to interpret the body language of both the living and the dead. Despite colleagues’ doubts about her mental state, she resumes her role at Homicide. Her new partner, Detective Uriah Ashby, doesn’t trust her sanity, and he has a story of his own he’d rather keep hidden. But a killer is on the loose, murdering young women, so the detectives have no choice: they must work together to catch the madman before he strikes again. And no one knows madmen like Jude Fontaine.
©2016 Theresa Weir (P)2016 Brilliance Audio, all rights reserved.I thought the way the lead character was displayed and how she reacted to her kidnapping and freedom was very well done. Detective novels are prone to formulaic characters (the divorced detective who drinks too much, etc....) but this was quite fresh. And the story line was, while not 100% original, well thought out.
I think if you like Tess Gerritsen (Rizzoli and Isles) you will probably like this book.
I plan on buying Book 2 when I finish this review.
Well written book!

A really good female led read & far better than I've made it sound.
Excellent, very different from anything else 👏

My only issue lies with the narrator. Narration is always a personal issue and, for me, the narrator here was so flat-toned that I nearly returned the audiobook and bought a hard copy instead.
I’m hoping that this the first in a series and that the others have a different narrator!
Great premise

The BEST female damaged detective protagonist that I’ve come across. Her partner Uriah is fab too.
It’s dark themes are excellent but not graphic or gory. Lots of intensity and tension which kept me riveted.
Loved the narrator who did a great job with the voices, instilling just the right amount of intensity, tension and drama.
I highly recommend this book if you like either crime or psychological thrillers.
