About this listen

'I genuinely could not put this down' – Stacey Halls, author of Mrs England
'A tour de force of a gothic thriller. I devoured it' – Gillian McAllister, author of Wrong Place, Wrong Time
'Taut, propulsive, beautifully done' – Susan Stokes-Chapman, author of Pandora

From Elizabeth Macneal, the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Doll Factory, The Burial Plot is a spellbinding Gothic thriller about murder and manipulation.

London, 1839. With the cemeteries full and money to be made in death, tricksters Crawford and Bonnie survive on wicked schemes and ill-gotten coin. But one blistering evening, their fortunes flip. A man lies in a pool of blood at Bonnie’s feet and now she needs to disappear.

Crawford secures her a position as lady’s maid in a grand house on the Thames. As Bonnie comes to understand the family – the eccentric Mr Moncrieff, obsessively drawing mausoleums for his dead wife, and their peculiar daughter Cissie, scribbling imaginary love letters to herself – she begins to question what secrets are lying behind the house’s paper-thin walls and whether her own presence here was planned from the beginning.

Because Crawford is watching, and perhaps he is plotting his greatest trick yet . . .

The audiobook includes an exclusive interview between the author, Elizabeth Macneal, and the narrator, Olivia Vinall.

I just couldn’t finish this book. There was something about it I didn’t like maybe the tortuous dragging out of the deception.

I have loved all the Author’s books but I was interested in all the details about the layout of every detail she went into before and when writing her books. I had heard EM at her book launch of Burial and also the at the end of the book chatting to the lady who read the Audible book. Superb

I really enjoyed this book. Some of the plot lines were a little predictable but not so much that I didn’t want to keep reading! The characters were very well developed and utterly believable.

Lovely twists and turns

I loved this. I saw the book while in Scotland on my honeymoon and looked it up online and ended up downloading it to listen to and I'm so glad I did. It was interesting, lots of twists and turns and interesting to see how women were treated a few hundred years ago.

Interesting historical book

Beautifully written with twists and turns that had me wanting more. Great characterization, especially the vulnerable female characters whom, under Victorian society rules, are expected to be passive and obedient, but when tested prove to have their own power to overcome adversity. Loved it and highly recommend, especially if you find traditional “historical romance” rather nauseating!
