حين يقطع الحطّاب شجرةً ليتدفأ بها، لا يفكّر في العصفور الذي يحرمه دفء عشّه بين أغصانها، ولكنّه يشفق عليه إذ يراه مقرورًا يناجي وهجًا كاذبًا خلف نافذته. كذلك هو الإنسان مع أخيه الإنسان، لحظة تستبدّ يه شهوة التملّك وتتضخم فيه نرجسية الذات. حطّابٌ لا تصمد أمامه أصلب الأشجار، ولا هو يهتمّ بما يسقط من فراخ.

لم يتوقف "ستيفان زفايغ" طوال مسيرته الإبداعية عن الحفر في باطن الذات الإنسانية ومكاشفة أدقّ خفاياها وأعنف انفعالاتها.

وبلا مواربة أو إيهام يضعنا أمام الحقيقة وهو يصوغها في روايته هذه (السرّ الحارق) على لسان طفلٍ في الثانية عشرة من عمره.

تحوّلت هذه الرواية إلى فيلم سينمائي ثلاث مرّات، كانت الأاولى عام 1933، وحينها منتعت الحكومة النازية عرض الفيلم في الصالات الألمانية. ثمّ في عام 1977 ثمّ في عام 1988.
