About this listen

Thea is a washed-up mimic exterminator who expected more out of life, not some hero from stories. Aven is an impulsive wandering adventurer whose personal goddess is constantly getting her into trouble. Neither of them has the slightest interest in getting involved in world-shaking historical events.

History doesn't care what they want, unfortunately. It's fallen right into their laps in the shape of a god-slaying weapon from a fallen civilization. Thrown together out of chance, Thea and Aven will have to learn to work together if they want to survive their pursuers.

Because if they fail, and the weapon falls into the wrong hands? The results won't be pretty. No one's going to be using it on some random street corner goddess, teakettle god, or any of the other countless teeming millions of divinities on Ishveos.

No, there's one target that sits above all others.

Cambrias, whose watch never ends. Cambrias, whose power has given rise to Cambrias' Wall, the greatest city in the known multiverse—a city that has already covered much of a continent and is strip-mining entire mountain ranges for space and building material. A city that threatens to spread across the entire surface of Ishveos.

And there's no shortage of folks willing to kill Thea and Aven in order to stop the Wall, no matter the consequences.

What an incredible new adventure

I picked up this book confident that it was going to be good after the Mage Errant series that is one of my top series of all time. I was NOT expecting this to skyrocket so high into my best reads so hard. This book is GOD TIER.

The characters are instantly loveable, the villains feel very real and nuanced, the magic system is very cool and flexible, and the world feels so very alive. The writing itself is all too real and has some very clear real world connections that make you think without needing a degree in English to appreciate.

John is such a gift to this space and I’m so excited to see where he goes from here!!

it's a good book, But....

the book itself is written well, the storyline in itself is amazing, but act one jumps too much from backstory to backstory, i literally waited for act one to end because of it, additionally ome of the main character goes rogue against her city fairly quickly in my opinion, yes she understands that the city is a problem but goes against it in a manner that feels like she was planning something like this for a while and if that is the case than john the author should have given this a bit more emphasis.

the book is good it really is, the plot holes are almost nonexistent and the magic system of the world is just the icing on the cake.

A genuinely unique and entertaining world

John Bierce is so creative and fun with his magic and world building. it's easily his best quality in his story telling for me, and this new series is no different, infact i think it has a chance to be superior to Mage Errant's magic system.
I have been in a fantasy slump of late since most series ive recently bought are just rehashes of already tried and true tropes retold in stale and unimaginative ways. This book is like palate cleanser of creativity. Doesn't hurt that the narration was also well done just making the experience even better.
If you like Mage Errant you will love this book. If Mage Errant interested you but you kinda lost interest in it or maybe you didnt like the YA feel? i think this book has a chance to be what you want. It is a better start than Mage Errants book 1 by a large margin in my opinion. Im 100% sold on this series. Can't wait to see what happens next!
