About this listen
It's 1941 and Britain is at war. For the aristocratic Walsingham family this means their grand home being taken over by the armed forces. But for newcomers Ava, Maudie and Bella, this is a chance for something more.
Each is ready to do their part for the war effort and soon become firm friends. But Lord Edward Walsingham seems like he is hiding something. And although he may be clever, he might have met his match in Maudie and the girls....
©2016 Daisy Styles (P)2016 W.F. Howes LtdI recommend it highly.
The characters so real, the story lines weaved together beautifully. And a unique take on the type of work women were conscripted to do during the war.
Everything was described so as to give a real sense of being there with them, and caring about what happened to them. I didn't want to leave the story, and wondered how there could be a fitting ending, but felt that was achieved.
Without Anne Dovers excellent narration though, it wouldn't have been brought to life half as well.
Excellent, with real bonds of friendship

This was a departure from the sort of story I normally listen to and I 'stumbled' across it as a suggestion for me. The story is of the life and loves of a group of women (and ultimately men) brought together as a result of the Second World War; the disparate group soon forge friendships that are meaningful and would last beyond the war. There was humour, love, sadness, grief, betrayal...the list could go on, all of it written so well that you really felt like you were with them. The narrator was excellent and I was sorry to get to the end of the book. I will be listening to The Bomb Girls next and hope that it will be as good as this was and that there are more offerings from this author very soon!
If in doubt about this book...do it...its the best story I have heard all year.
