About this listen

Please note: This audio drama is for mature audiences only. It contains strong language, violence, and sexual content. Discretion is advised.

James Patterson's Detective Billy Harney is back, this time investigating murders in a notorious Chicago drug ring, which will lead him, his sister, and his new partner through a dangerous web of corrupt politicians, vengeful billionaires, and violent dark web conspiracies.

In The Coldest Case: A Black Book Audio Drama, homicide detective Billy Harney sends his new partner, Kate, deep undercover in a notorious Chicago drug ring. When several members of the ring soon turn up dead, Billy abruptly pulls Kate out, blowing her cover. Kate’s informant inside the gang quickly disappears. As does the ring’s black book....

When Billy can’t find the informant, he wonders if Kate is secretly harboring her, since the two grew close during Kate's weeks undercover. As Billy and Kate investigate the ring’s murders, they’ll be pulled into a dangerous web of corrupt politicians, vengeful billionaires, drugged pro-athletes, and violent, dark web conspiracies, all in search of the missing black book.

It's Got Everything

it's got action, suspense (though not that intense), Clever twists, and good use of story Characters. I listened using some noise cancelling headphones to capture the moments imaginatively. overall its a good read.

You've heard it all before

Solid production, sometimes a bit "stagey", but considering the dialogue isn't naturalistic the cast only had so much to go on.

Two stars for being a fairly fun romp, but there's nothing new here, every trope is squarely hit, focus is on action not characterisation. I don't like or dislike the characters as I don't know them at all - they aren't people, they're vehicles for clichés. it's as if it's a longer, clunkier NCIS episode - fun romp but instantly forgettable.

And we have that thing where an author doesn't go for any rooting in reality, they hear a bit about e-sports, bitcoin, IoT, whatever and rather than understand them, just borrow some words and use them to hide plot magic. That helps a series of deductive leaps "oh slow down that recording - enhance - that cough, I recognise that cough, it can only come from the girl we are looking for who secretly came here at the same time as us to try to sell the USB drive to the football player my wife likes who happened to record a video message" stuff.

I appreciate this being a library freebie this month, it was something a bit different, and now I know the author and that he's not for me.

Completed this in one day!

This kept me hooked all the way through. Great twist at the end but did see it coming after a few episodes in.

Aaron Paul was particularly stand out for me :)

Started well, finished as cheesy as Blue Bloods!

This had potential to be brilliant, but ended up a bit run of the mill, predictable and very cheesy. like an episode of blue bloods, but without Donnie Whalberg!

Great story

Compelling listening. Enjoyed it but the ending felt a bit rushed. Not much of an explanation about Billy’s reasoning for his change of mindset on the culprit.

Good story line but

but glad it was not too long. plot was a bit predictable. Well performed with a variety of voices and background sounds. A nice change from the standard read book

Short and snappy but lacks depth

A little predictable for me, maybe written for a quick tv show but lacked any depth or complexity
