About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The only question which hangs over the life of Sir Richard Wyndham, notable whip, dandy and Corinthian, is one of marriage. On the eve of making the most momentous decision of his life, he is on his way home, a little worse for drink, when he chances upon a beautiful young fugitive climbing out of a window by means of knotted sheets - and so finds a perfect opportunity for his own escape.

The Corinthian has eveything that Georgette Heyer's devoted readership came to expect and that made her one of the most popular novelists of her day and still adored by a huge audience.

I found this really hard to listen to - the narrator has no idea how to pronounce some of the words - vinaigrette as vinegaret and Hoby as hobby for example - and that is so irritating. Although she can read she can't act - all the voices sound the same. I am getting fed up with Audible using narrators who don't understand how to read. Are they perhaps cheaper? I just love Phyllida Nash and could listen to her all day but her books are getting harder to find. I am now reading The Corinthian myself on Kindle instead.

Spoiled by narration

I love GH books, but I really struggled to keep inerest until the end of this story.

The narrator was so annoying with her pronunciation of Sir (space) Richard. But overall it was a reasonable listen

It was a fun story

Such an entertaining and delightful story which wasn’t really done full justice in the telling

Entertaining

One of my favourite Georgette Heyers, a gentle comedy adventure of a love story. I was excited to see a new recording as the previous audible edition available was rendered unlistenable by very high pitched male voices.
I still love this book (historical sexism aside), and am really glad to have this to listen to, but I was frequently thrown out of the story by the new narrator Remmie Milner. She has a pleasant voice, but as others have said, there is little distinction between characters. I also felt like the reading was rushed, and words said with little thought to their context. Is it really so hard to find narrators who know the correct pronunciations? Haute is not pronounced “hort.”

Just about bearable narration

One of Heyer's lighthearted stories spoilt by using a narrator totally unsuited to the style of the story. Unfortunately, the works of the greatest Regency Romance author have not been treated well by the publishers who have appointed narrators not suited to the task in many instances..

Classic Heyer

Narrator very much same tone throughout. Loved to have Richard Armitage read another of Heyer’s stories or Helen Taylor.

Narrator not very good

After reading a review that this was one of her funniest novels I was very disappointed. I am not sure if it was the novel lacking in humour or if it was just that the narrator did not suit this novel. Either way the narrator was not the right choice for this book. She was not annoying or irritating, just unfortunately didn’t suit the novel.

I recommend the audible version of the reluctant widow and sprig Muslin. Brilliant captured here on audible.

Big georgette Heyer fan but disappointed

Very nice narration. Full of twists and turns. Enjoyable to the end. I wish I had been born (Rich) in the Regency age.

Typical wonderfully Georgette Heyer

I love Heyer’s books and have really been enjoying the Audible library of them, but this one was the worst narration I have come across. I have found that many of the Audible narrators have different quirks and the odd voice that doesn't feel right, but I always manage to get used to them and enjoy the book in the end. This version however has a narrator without the basic comprehension to get the correct sense of what she's reading, often changing the meaning or nuance of the text. it's very jarring and a lot of the joy is lost from the book because of the lack of variety in expression.

Disappointing narration
