It was that door, that solitary door. The door was somehow connected to an event that had occurred one hundred years ago. Somehow it was a portal to another time and place. This is another superb story from the pen of John Holt. The story is well written and the listener is immediately captivated by the intrigue and suspense. The Cottage door stands alone in the grassy area, nothing either side of it or so it seems. There is a scream from behind the door and there starts a fascinating story of murder. James Thomson's narration is spot on and helps make this a must read. I have listened to it twice already and the third time is fast approaching! Can't recommend highly enough.

The author, John Holt, has written some really fine mysteries, so it's not surprising that this short is most mysterious. Looking for his runaway dog, a man hears screams then finds a wooden door standing alone in a clearing in the woods. No building attatched. Just a door. And the screams seemed to be coming from it.The
The story is a puzzle for both the main character, Ashby, and the reader, with enough revea!ed to tickle the imagination. It is delicious fun, if a little repetitious at times, presumably to reinforce a growing mental frustration.
The main problem with this charming, harrowing (?) story is the narration. James Thompson has a pleasant enough English home counties voice and reads clearly but without any emotional charisma, sounding amateurish and underwhelming in the intensity of the story. A great pity. A better performance could lift The Cottage Door into something quite special.

This is the second, and better, story about The Door', though not the same one, presumably, and the Ashby in this - was he also related to the man in the first? It is not necessary to have read that first book to enjoy this one, though it does add intrigue. It was also read by James Thomson.
