About this listen

While working in the ancient Silk Road city of Aleppo, American Hannah Johnson and her Swedish lover Oskar are drawn into the mounting turbulence of the impending Syrian civil war.

After Oskar is wounded at a street protest one evening, he and Hannah cross paths with Dr. Samir Hasan, a renowned surgeon. As the protests swell into all-out war, Dr. Hasan tends not only to Oskar, but also risks his life, his practice, and his family to tend to a nephew the government has branded an insurgent.

Dr. Hasan's humanitarian activities come to the attention of a vengeful, Javert-like secret police officer whose son's death on Dr. Hasan's watch triggers a series of events that will drag Hannah and Oskar deeper into the war and put Hannah and Dr. Hasan in the officer's crosshairs.

Both intimate and sweeping in scope, The Doctor of Aleppo lends insight into how the most brutal, devastating war of the 21st century is mirrored on the personal scale, leaving scars that can never be healed.

War time suspense

A well paced story with good characters that makes you think about religion, obsession and violence pitted against love, ethics, honour and forces of good. The violent ending was harrowing but brought to a head the themes of the book. Very well read with a good plot kept me interested and involved for the whole of the book.

A love story that moved me , spoiler alert

An unlikely, unsentimental and profoundly moving tale of love. Sammy's love for his work, his children, Hanna's for the children and the man... set against a background of fanaticisms, violence, stupidity, delusion. The sobriety of the language and the lack of sentimentality made the actions of the characters stronger than words.
I haven't cried at the ending of a book in a long time, but this story truly moved me.

Good story good insight

As I work in emergency nursing I found the detail of medical interventions very tedious and unnecessarily over explained, irrelevant to the story line, however overall it was a nice story and gave good insight to the plight of the people of Aleppo.

Fantastic

Heartbreaking. Beautiful story and wonderful narration but it broke my heart, especially since this is how I imagine it is in real life in war-torn countries.

Ground for greatness but never utilized

The premise was set very nicely for a great story but ended up in an average one instead. It was a mix of many interesting things but failed to capitalize in any single one in particular. Rather disappointed by the time I finished the book.

A nail-biting but unemotional war tale.

If you're expecting the Beekeeper of Aleppo, you'll be disappinted. This is a very different story, with a very masculine tone. Doctor Sami is not the most sympathetic hero, but you can't help but root for him, as a brilliant surgeon trying to survive and protect his family in any way he can.
The other characters are not as rounded but there's a sense of cat and mouse that drives the story. I finished it quickly and enjoyed the authentic narration, but it lacked emotional depth for me. Some of the most tragic events were glossed over, which is at times was a blessing, as it gets pretty harrowing in parts. Would make a great film.
