Andrew Motion
About this listen
An inspiring collection of the greatest British and Irish poetry brought to life in a rich multi-voice production.
In this comprehensive anthology, former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion has gathered together exceptional poems from the 14th century through to the present day, creating an extraordinary poetic journey for the listener. From the love poems of Shelley and Keats to the grim war elegies of Owen and Sassoon, there is a poem here for every sentiment, each with something different to offer.
It is often said that poetry should be read aloud and here the genius of poets including Blake, Brontë and Hardy is given fresh relevance by an exciting multi-voice cast. And in addition to the poems themselves, section introductions from Andrew Motion make the collection accessible and easy to navigate.
Whether you are new to poetry or a devotee returning to old favourites, The Drifted Stream offers a uniquely immersive way to experience some of the most celebrated verse written in English.

A beautiful collection of poems, beautifully read
A terrific collection of poems (as you'd expect when curated by Andrew Motion!), and so eclectic: everything from medieval poetry to Benjamin Zephaniah, via Shelley and Keats and the war poets... Which makes it the kind of collection you can easily dip into if you're after a fix of a certain 'kind' of poetry. It's really well-directed too, with terrific readings by all the cast. Bravo to all concerned.

Listen again and again
I love poetry being read to me, and this is a perfect anthology to listen to. The selection includes many old favourites (everything from Shakespeare to Edward Lear to Wilfred Owen) as well as many poems that are new to me. They’re read by a large cast of readers, all with fine enunciation and just the right amount of expressiveness. The collection is split chronologically into sections, each introduced by Andrew Motion; his introductions, as well as being informative, themselves sound like poems in prose. The whole collection is well organised and labelled with a separate chapter for each poem, making it easy to find a particular poem, or return to it. I know I’ll be listening to them again and again.
