This beautifully written and expertly narrated true story of a young girl plucked from poorest Indian village life for a different and better future, delights and moves the reader by turns. The unique insight into village life from Shilpa, the first of her family to gain entry to University, is second to none. As featured on BBC iplayers "daughters of destiny" we also see in this book, the uplifting work of Dr George, in his giving an education to those otherwise destined to do the lowliest and toughest work and in giving a home to some that had none.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. Well done to Shilpa Raj. I look forward to your next book when it comes.

Enjoyed it but felt the story just petered out at the end and warranted another chapter or two to finish it off properly.

I would have ran for the hills aswell if I was her. What a horrible existence. Probably the one good thing they gave her was a good education

An education about the extraordinary difficulties and discrimination a woman experiences in an impoverished village in India. And how its customs and practices are generally just “accepted”. The main character is able to both experience and observe and critique from a distance. I enjoyed the audio performance too.

It hasn't let me down. A must listen.
