Summary

Patrick Gale's The Facts of Life is a mesmerising, epic yet intimate novel of love, music and the life events that stay with us forever - perfect for any fan of Armistead Maupin or E M Forster.

German composer Edward Pepper escapes to England just before the war begins in earnest. Struck with TB, he is recuperating in hospital when he meets Sally, a young doctor who has battled her way through medical school despite the opposition of her parents. They fall in love and marry, settling in the fenlands of East Anglia. Years later, Edward watches as his grandchildren trip up against life and death and realises that patterns can repeat themselves, bringing both pain and unexpected discovery.

Wonderful book

I read this book about 8 years ago so listening to it was like a visit from an old friend. So many emotions , a rollercoaster ride ,and yet left with a feeling of Hope ,for all of us mankind.

I didn’t want it to end.

Patrick Gale at his finest. I didn’t want it to end. It’s made better by Patrick reading it himself.

Slow and a little bland

This is my fourth Patrick Gale book on Audible. However it’s the first book that I have not really enjoyed. I’m not sure if it was the story, the narration or both. Basically it came over a little dull and lacked any real emotion. I am not sure I will bother with the last three hours. I will go back to A Place Called Winter as that was my first audio book by Patrick Gale and really loved it. Having said that, Take Nothing With You is the best of the four I have purchased.

Overlong Novel

The plot and scenes at The Roundel were interesting and but the descriptions of the sexual activities were unnecessarily graphic. There was much in this long book that I did not enjoy.

Too long

Rambling and lacking in focus, it’s difficult to see what the book is really about. Some graphic descriptions of sex and of the effects of AIDS.
