About this listen

It is still the War of 1812 and Jack Aubrey - with his tetchy, sardonic friend Stephen Maturin - has set course across the South Atlantic to intercept a powerful American frigate outward bound to play havoc with the British whaling trade. If they do not come up with her before she rounds the Horn, they must follow her into the Great South Sea and as far across the Pacific as she may lead them.

But Aubrey has to cope with a succession of disasters - men overboard, castaways, encounters with savages, storms, typhoons, groundings, shipwrecks, to say nothing of murder and criminal insanity.

another totally immersive yarn, detailed and rich. as a historian with a special interest in the eighteenth century, I can testify to the depth of research which underpins this exciting tale. quite amazing and completely convincing..Von to the next episode!

brilliant as ever

But I still love them!! Not sure why I keep on with it. Hooked. So my dear - on.

Fairly slow

Great story and performance as per usual, but let down by poor editing with sentences often repeated that have been missed by the editor.

Great story and performance but poor editing.

I almost stopped listening to this one as it was so very slow and dull in the first half(?) of the book. It gets much more interesting later on, but could have done with some more editing...

.. speaking of which, as others have pointed out there are a few instances of re-recorded lives not having been edited out which spoils the flow somewhat.

One for completionists only I think.

Mostly dull, then some excitement!

Good story well narrated but lots of repeated sentences due to poor production. way below the usual standard.

badly edited

If you're this far into the series just keep going... don't be put off by some negative reviews, it's the same great quality you'd expect from Mr O'Brien... sometimes the tempo of the story drops a little but always worth listening on, as it builds to a crescendo! Editing errors, but nothing too serious if you've enjoyed the previous books it won't put you off, it's just a little jarring when it happens.

Aubrey and Maturin Pure And Simple
