During those fateful weeks before Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait, a fragment of radio intercept had referred to Qubth-ut-Allah, a devastating secret weapon that could rain death and destruction on the Allied forces. Despite Allied scepticism, Major Mike Martin, an SAS man who can pass as an Arab, is sent into Kuwait to assess Iraqi strength and help the resistance.

What he discovers there takes him into the heart of Baghdad, where he is to 'run' the Iraqi spy known as Jericho, the sleeper who might be prepared to provide vital information for money. It is a highly dangerous operation, the results of which cause the Allies to delay their ground assault for four days - while Martin parachutes into the Iraqi mountains on the most hazardous mission of his life: to find and destory Qubth-ut-Allah - the Fist of God.

I read this book when it first came out in print and was delighted to get it on Audible. Simply put this is the best book I have ever read. At over 22 hours it is long but it needs to be. There is very little of what might be called 'filling in', and it is hard to see how it could be abridged.

Based on events surrounding the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the amassing of Allied Forces during Desert Shield and the subsequent Desert Storm, this is a masterpiece where fact meets fiction and may leave you wondering where one ends and the other begins. The characters are believable and numerous and include Brits, Americans, Kuwaitis, Iraqis, Israelis, Russians and Austrians, but Mr Forsyth introduces them skilfully and the narrative flows well.

Given the subject matter it would be easy to make the mistake of thinking this is purely a gung ho tale of military action, but there is much, much more to this book than that. There is suspense, intrigue, espionage, humour and even a necessary but not overdone love interest.

This is one of those books that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next, but not really wanting to get to the end. Love, love, love it.

It was a great listen, great roller coaster with lots of technical detail. And some real cliff hangers that made it hard to stop listening

This was a great example of Frederick Forsyth’s compelling story telling. It was a thrilling listen, with lots of false summits and suspense. It was also very well researched, with the vast majority of descriptions and technical details accurate to the best of my knowledge (this is my area of work). In only one respect was there an obvious error that the editor should have spotted: NBC has for decades been the NATO acronym for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (weapons, preparedness, threats etc): not Bacteriological. If I have a criticism, it’s that the book is a little blimpish - the cosy cabal of British public schoolboys are always just a tad smarter than the arabs and Americans! Well maybe we are, but the reader’s accent and style made this book feel very stuck in the past. Still, a ripping yarn and wholly recommended.

Frederick Forsyth has been a great storyteller and this by far has been his best. From the first moment I started listening to the audible I was hooked. Credit to the reader with his excellent depictions of various nationalities especially the British.

wow,wow,wow. A masterpiece of storytelling. I think it could be true. on the book it says " to those who really knew what happened in Iraq" he is well informed and has friends in high places. brilliant book. the narrator grows on you after 20 mins and is perfect. this would make a great movie or 6 part TV show

legendary read

As usual, Mr Forsyth's research is extremely good and he builds a credible set of circumstances round a fascinating story. The clues are there to give you some idea of which characters are responsible, but you have to listen hard and follow the action; thank goodness you can rewind! I'm no expert, but he portrays what it may have been like serving a tyrant. Worth every penny for a great story. Slightly less impressed by the narration, so all the stars are for the author.
