About this listen

The tenth book in the epic and bestselling series that has gripped millions.

A hero will be forged from this broken land.

As seen on Netflix and BBC around the world.

From the day it was stolen from me I had dreamed of recapturing Bebbanburg. The great fort was built on a rock that was almost an island, it was massive, it could only be approached on land by a single narrow track – and it was mine.

Britain is in a state of uneasy peace. Northumbria’s Viking ruler, Sigtryggr, and Mercia’s Saxon Queen Aethelflaed have agreed a truce. And so England’s greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago – and which his scheming cousin still occupies.

But fate is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he has sworn combine to distract him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg. New enemies enter into the fight for England’s kingdoms: the redoubtable Constantin of Scotland seizes an opportunity for conquest and leads his armies south. Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of annihilation.

But Uhtred is determined that nothing, neither the new enemies nor the old foes who combine against him, will keep him from his birthright. He is the Lord of Bebbanburg, but he will need all the skills he has learned in a lifetime of war to make his dream come true.

An Awesome Book Series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have only reviewed the last book as I couldn't be bothered to do all 10. I would definitely recommend this series. Bernard Cornwell has a way of making everything so believable. His historical detail has a lot to do with it.
If you liked the Warlord chronicles you will like this. And if you havn't read the warlord chronicles then do so, it's better than this series.

Any additional comments?

It's a shame the original narrator didn't do all 10 book's. It does spoil it a bit when it's a talking book and the voice's keep changing.

Excellent as ever

Excellent as ever. Just wish the TV series was as easily available. I'd like to think it will continue as with the Sharpe series.

I can only give 5 stars, it deserves many more.

All 10 books in this series are fantastic listening, I have already heard them several times (as each new book came out I have played them again to retell the story, before starting the new book) an epic story crafted by a master, thank you Bernard Cornwell for many hours of pleasurable reading, but now the story ends !! I suppose I could always start from book once again ...............

epic!

An amazing story, extremely well written and beautifully narrated. Possibly my favourite of the series so far, I'd give more stars if I could. And please keep Matt Bates as narrator for future installments as I now read these books in his voice.

Brilliant story with plenty of artistic license.

This book kept me listening for most of the night during the actual assault, I couldn't pick it up to pause it!

The Wolf pack

We finally reach the place that we have waited to get too all this time, and it is everything we could have imagined. Incredible addition to the series. Matt Bates had found his feet in the last couple of books but he is running now, he is Uthred. Great performance to add to a great novel!
