About this listen

In a world of elves and dwarves and sprites and mages, Tane Carver is a human with no gift but his wits. Which, to be fair, did get him into the world's most prestigious university of magical technology.

For a while. Until his lack of magic was discovered. And then it all came crashing down.

But when a student is murdered on campus behind unbreakable wards, Tane gets a second chance. Solving an impossible crime should be easy for the man who fooled the university's best mages for years. Except he's not counting on the head constable being an old flame who isn't so fond of him anymore. Or on Kadka, the half-crazy half-orc who insists she's his partner - whether he likes it or not.

Not to mention the masked mage who keeps trying to kill him. Now, Tane's survival depends on the one truth that has never failed him. The flaw in all magic that those who have it prefer to ignore: the mage.

Outsmart the mage, and you outsmart the spell. And outsmarting mages is what Tane does best.

A brilliant adventure, great characters, so glad it’s the first in a series as I wasn’t ready to part company with the characters. I particularly enjoyed the explanations of the science behind the magic and the main character’s in depth knowledge of this science.

Intriguing

I only got this audio because I like the narrator Travis Baldree, having listened to quite a few books with him narrating.
To be honest it took a while to get into the story, however once the characters evolved and the storyline progressed, I found myself actually enjoying the book.
I listen at night to help me fall asleep and rewind to where I nodded off the next night. 😴
Worth a listen if you like fantasy and escaping everyday, in your mind at least.

Audiobook read by Travis Baldree.
Tane Carver faked his way through magical university to prove a point - that the flaw in magic lies in the mage - but when he revealed his secret (that he personally had no magic at all) he was expelled. Now the dean has called him in because one of the students (someone Tane was close to) has been murdered using magic, and Tane's unique skills - of spotting the flaw - are needed. He accidentally acquires a sidekick/partner when Kadka, a half-orc ex-guard, attaches herself to the investigation. Life gets complicated when an old flame turns out to be the Blue Cap in charge of solving the crime. This is fast-paced, though Traviss Baldree (who I usually like as a narrator) does tend to drawl, and occasionally sounds a little bored, but the narration works well enough to keep the story interesting.

Wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this title. However I was pleasantly surprised. The world building was detailed enough without being overwhelming and the characters likeable. Kadka, as the foil for the main protagonist, is particularly likeable. Will definitely look at the rest in the series. Travis Baldree’s performance was very good and really helped to bring the characters to life.

Unexpectedly good

A great story that led me to listening almost continually. Beware of upsetting your partner/ children/ colleagues by not paying attention to them.

I'm looking forward to my next credit when I can continue the series.

Enjoyable twist to magical fantasy.

Brilliantly narrated, a pleasure to listen to.

Looking forward to listening to more in this series.
A stand alone book in its own right but this world and its characters want to tell you more.
