About this listen

A sweeping and atmospheric story of family ties, interwoven mysteries, love and redemption, set between Scotland and Newfoundland, from the author of Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year The House Between Tides

We never leave the places we love - we carry them with us...

1940. Wounded and guilt-ridden, war hero Archie Maxwell returns to Rosslie, his beautiful family estate in Argyll, where he finds himself in the uneasy company of his father's young new wife - and his own nightmares.

1965. In the Newfoundland fishing harbour of Heart's Repose, eleven-year-old Eva Bayne strikes up an unlikely friendship with the local outcast, Tam Nairn. But against the threat of change, and the hostility of Tam's son, suspicions flare - until a crisis threatens to rip all their lives apart.

1980. The disappearance of Rosslie's heir has cast a shadow over the Maxwell family for almost 40 years. When Eva, now a fledgling journalist, is drawn into the mystery, the glimpse of an old photograph unlocks painful childhood memories. Will the past give up its secrets?

Atmospheric, sweeping and poignant, this is a spellbinding story of family secrets, love and redemption

I enjoy Sarah Maine’s books, but this has been my favourite by far. She has a talent for weaving tales that stretch across time, but unlike some of her other stories, both past and present in this book are set within living memory, from the 1940s to 1980s.
I found that this particular story had echoes of my own family’s history, which made it extremely relatable and very moving indeed.
A beautiful story, sensitively and insightfully told. I highly recommend the read.

Moving story of secrets, love and loss

highly recommend: great plot, well- developed characters, very atmospheric and dealing with different issues throughout the plot. The narrative takes place in three different times which sometimes can be off-putting but this was managed quite well in this book. i listened to the book in one go. Again, if you look for a book that combines a great story, well-developed characters, knowing about the context of different eras and you want to be transported to Argyle and Newfoundland, this is for you.

great listen, complex and engaging

uuugh, why oh why do so many narrators make the character with a 'scottish accent' sound as if they just arrived from northern Ireland via Wales!! Please just dont even attempt it, just read it in your own accent🙏. I gave up on the story as this was too distacting,, sorry.
