About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
February 1944. Six months since Nazi forces occupied Rome.
Inside the beleaguered city, the Contessa Giovanna Landini is a member of the band of Escape Line activists known as ‘The Choir’. Their mission is to smuggle refugees to safety and help Allied soldiers, all under the nose of Gestapo boss Paul Hauptmann.
During a ferocious morning air raid a mysterious parachutist lands in Rome and disappears into the backstreets. Is he an ally or an imposter? His fate will come to put the whole Escape Line at risk.
Meanwhile, Hauptmann’s attention has landed on the Contessa. As his fascination grows, she is pulled into a dangerous game with him – one where the consequences could be lethal.
Critic reviews
It was hard to turn pages fast enough to keep up with the rapid-fire pace of The Ghosts of Rome. Joseph O'Connor lures readers into a little known, but important, facet of World War II history and keeps them hooked until the very last page. (Marie Benedict, New York Times bestselling author of THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE)

Ghosts of Rome - a triumph
A beautifully crafted, well written and meticulously researched book, highly recommended. Perfectly paced, tension maintained throughout, completely believable account, the characters so easily and authentically portrayed.

Fantastic story and narration.
Loved everything about this and the previous book. The descriptive language the author uses transport’s the reader to 1940’s Rome. All the narration was good but Stephen Hogan raises the books to another level, just wonderful listening.

Highly Recommended
Having read the first of The Roman Escape Line books "My Father's House"., I egearly awaited this second in Joseph O'Connor's serie. It certainly Did not disappoint and I genuinely believe it is even better that the first book.. The subject matter is fascinating and clearly the researched in the greatest depth. This makes a wonderful and deeply compelling story to read or listen to. The narration by several excellent readers /actors makes it more like a dramatisation. Everything about GHOSTS OF ROME. is excellent and makes me want to Giev it the highest possible recommendation.

A gripping and moving tale
Joseph O'Connor's second volume of his Rome Escape Line saga is as engaging as the first but the audio version is spoiled by the butchering of every Italian phrase, name and place name by the principal male reader. Hopefully he will ask advice on pronunciation if he is going to read the third volume.

Not for me
I found chapter one was cinematic in scale .I think if I enjoyed the history of Rome during these war years I might have relished the great pace and dynamic charge within .Perhaps listening wasn’t the way to engage with this sequel .I thoroughly enjoyed the first book .I know if it’s translated into cinema I will go to see it .I can’t help feeling the author was having too much fun .Pausing it with 2hrs to go !
