this is another superb book from this author it is very emotional well worth the read .

There were lots of twists and turns to this story. Although it was fiction it could easily be true. It made me realise that whatever country you are in there are always so many casualties of war.

this book was bought on a whim, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it but I haven't been able to stop listening, the characters, the storyline, the backdrop of a horrendous war with enough authenticity that it felt so real... it's a book I think everyone should read/listen too.

In the UK we are taught about the Blitz that occurred around our country, but very little is spoken about the bombing of German and the numbers of innocent people killed there. Perhaps this book should be read by older school children to help them understand how different German people reacted in the closing year of the 2nd World War.

This had me hooked from start to finish. I’ve read a lot of ww2 novels but I think this is the first I’ve read which delves into wartime Germany from a non-Jewish German’s perspective, as in the case of Magda and Max… a beautiful but tragic tale, with Jewish Lola’s heart wrenchingly sad story told beautifully, and which was narrated masterfully. I don’t think I’ve ever really realised the dreadful effect of the Dresden bombings and the final months of battle on ‘normal Germans’. Highly recommend this book

The story of the horrors of the Second World War as experienced by two Jewish sisters. This story is unbearably sad and yet shows just how indomitable the human spirit is. Love and war described at it’s best and it’s very worst. There are no winners here.

Heartbreakingly real and well performed. An unmissable listen.
