Summary

Based on the lives of real people and yet so brutal and shocking in places that it's almost impossible to believe, Mario Puza weaves a dark and compelling narrative that climaxes with a blistering showdown.

Tyrant, blackmailer, racketeer, murderer - his influence reaches every level of American society. Meet Don Corleone, a friendly man, a just man, areasonable man. The deadliest lord of the Cosa Nostra. The Godfather.

A modern masterpiece,The Godfather is a searing portrayal of the 1940s criminal underworld. It is also the intimate story of the Corleone family, at once drawn together and ripped apart by its unique position at the core of the American Mafia. Still shocking 40 years after it was first published, this compelling tale of blackmail, murder, and family values is a true classic.

Enlightening

What did you like most about The Godfather?

I have watched the film trilogy a million times. I know the script verbatim! But I never read the book. (I know, bad me). I love all the extra detail that as a film fan. you just don't get! about Vito Corleone and his rise as Godfather

What did you like best about this story?

The detail about Vito Corleone's rise to power, Tom Hagan and Kay's history. It builds their characters so much!

What does Joe Mantegna bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Knowing Joe's voice and knowing him from the Godfather III movie just brings it all to life. He has a powerful voice and its a great actor.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Michael's acceptance that he loved his father and that he had to take control and be a part of something he avoided all his life.

Any additional comments?

Absolutely loved it!!

Fantastic classic brought to life

The story is great and so involved that the relationship between the key characters comes to life. The book covers the first two films approximately but gives more life and context.

This has to be THE definitive gangster book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Godfather to be better than the print version?

Hard to say whether the audio book is better than the print version as it's unabridged and the narrator did a great job. However, it might be useful to compare it to the film, in which case the unabridged story is better in some ways as the characters have more depth and their sub plots are played out a lot more fully. The film also left out some of the less pleasant sides of some of the characters.

What other book might you compare The Godfather to, and why?

Weirdly enough, out of the audio books I've listened to, I'd probably compare it to Dune by Frank Herbert. Not an exact match, but the way the politics, guile and ambitions of the characters and explanations of cultural history are interwoven gives a similar kind of richness of believability

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Perhaps 'enjoyment' is the wrong word, but the scenes that showed the true nature of some of the characters were quite shocking, even these days. E.g. in the film, Luca Brasi was obviously a thug, but in the book some of his actions really are horrific (and not remotely 'honorable')

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I hope Francis Ford Coppola likes my version :)

Any additional comments?

If you're a fan of the film, the book is still worth reading (probably even more so)

As fresh as ever!

Superb... Enjoyed more than the book. Unforgettable and extraordinary. Narration was seamless between characters. So didn't want the end

Classic story

The film was so well made that the book will be very familiar to any fans. I particularly enjoyed the reading as the narrator captures the feel of the story very well and certainly adds to a very well written book.

Loved every single second

This is a wonderful book I have read and a superb film I have seen so many times, but having it read to me by Joe Mantegna has turned out to be probably the perfect way to enjoy the story... just 18 hours of bliss. I loved every single second and didn’t want it to end ... 10/10!

Masterpiece

Absolute masterpiece. The story and the narration are simply fantastic. The story is widely known as a classic for good reason and there could not have been a better narrator for it. Just spot on. Most enthralling item I've had the pleasure to listen to on Audible so far and probably the best piece of fiction I've ever had the pleasure of.
