About this listen

Bring history back to life through this historically accurate and edifying program read by Jim Hodges.

In this exciting sequel to The Coral Island, R. M. Ballantyne continues the adventures of Ralph Rover, Jack Martin, and Peterkin Gay, who go to hunt and study Africa's elusive gorilla. The trio has a knack for finding danger, and there are many hilarious and hair-raising events they must pass through. Elephants and lions are just a few of the dangers that roam the African safari. The real question is, can Ralph, Jack, and Peterkin survive the dangers of a brutal slave-trader and a volatile native king?

I got this audiobook because I enjoyed 'The Coral Island'. I was familiar with the narrator of the Coral Island and his attempt at the west country accent. The Gorilla Hunters was a totally different, inferior book. It was bloodthirsty and showed the three 'heroes' as nothing more than hunters who killed animals just because they were there. Ballantyne threw in a liberal amount of bible bashing and venerated missionaries, yet the three main characters spouted Christian values then shot animals for the sport of it ! I understood why the book was very racist and condescending with the use of language unacceptable if written today but in Ballantynes day it was possible to write. The language is something one needs to be able to tolerate. It is full of adventure and has parallels to Coral island , it's as if with age the three became much less innocent. Finally the narrator was awful, no west country accent for these three local lads. The voices he attributed to the three was just bad and Peterkin was made to sound like a young Micky Rooney just weird ! Fortunately you can return books on Audible !

Nowhere near as good as the prequel
