About this listen

The BBC TV soundtrack of the acclaimed Jackanory multi-voice reading of The Hobbit. Broadcast to mark the 3000th programme of the much-loved children's series Jackanory, The Hobbit was transmitted over two weeks and 10 episodes in 1979. It told the gripping story of Bilbo Baggins and his band of dwarves, who are on a quest for the treasure guarded by the fearsome dragon Smaug.

As he leaves his cosy hobbit-hole and travels into the wild, Bilbo's adventures begin. On his journey, he will encounter trolls, goblins, elves and giant spiders - as well as a mysterious and magical ring and a strange, sinister creature named Gollum.

Read by Bernard Cribbins, Jan Francis, Maurice Denham and David Wood, this rare audio soundtrack is sure to offer a treat for all fans of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Oh how I loved this story when it was on Jackanory as a child. Fantastic to hear it again, a superb cast and excellent production.

Wonderful childhood memories returned

Top notch Cribbins, neatly abridged (it's listing here as unabridged is incorrect but don't be put off by that), a classy troupe of readers and the battle is over and done with in ten minutes.

Great!

I think that the people moaning about it not being unabridged are not truly au fait with 'Jackanory' which was a daily TV show presenting abridged readings. The recording is an unabridged version of JACKANORY, and so those with an ounce of brains, would expect the story itself to be an abridged format.

If you can't feel the love for this classic, you need to check for a pulse.

It IS unabridged...

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

If you remember it being broadcast originally (showing my age!) then this is a great piece to bring back memories... If you never heard it before or don't remember it in a warm light then don't bother, there are better out there.

Unabridged Jackanory production of Abridged Hobbit

Bernard Cribbins! Remember this from my childhood. Misremembered Michael Hordern as Gandalf though! Crisp abridgement

It was a great book. It was fascinating because you never knew what was going to happen next.

Let’s be honest, Bernard Cribbens had a black belt in Jackanory. Well paced and accurate to the book. Really enjoying it.

Great Bit Of British Nostalgia

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Advertising the story as unabridged is misleading. It is an abridged version of the original story.

Not unabridged
