About this listen

Brought to you by Puffin.

This wonderfully funny audio collection contains eight adventures from the master of animal tales, Dick King-Smith.

Perfect for young listeners, this magical collection features one of Dick King-Smith's most loved stories: The Hodgeheg.

Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it's on the wrong side of the road from the park where there's a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms and snails!

The busy road is dangerous, but Max is determined to make his way across. If humans can do it, why can't hedgehogs? His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head, and, when Max tries to speak, he realises his words are all mixed up. He is no longer a hedgehog but a hodgeheg!

Still determined to fulfil his mission, Max discovers the best way to cross the road - with the help of the lollipop lady and some careful detective work....

Other timeless classics included in this collection are:

As one of the first audiobooks released for Dick King-Smith's Centenary, this is a very good start! These feature a selection of his stories that are otherwise unknown, or have never had an audiobook release before.

Some might be daunted by the running time (although 8 hours), and some might even question why several books and individual stories have been packaged together. However, I feel this was a good decision - you get several stories for a single price rather than having to pay for each book individually, and each story has their own chapter clearly marked (something that Audible has had problems with in the past). This includes longer books like 'The Merrythought' and 'Under the Mishmash Trees', which have multiple chapters of their own. Plus, it's ideal for long travel journeys, or something to fall asleep to at night.

In addition, Ciaran Saward reads all of them beautifully - he has a strong range of voices and accents, and knows exactly when to deliver emotion and humour where it's needed.

All in all, highly recommended for DKS fans and first time readers / listeners :-)

A Fantastic Start!
