About this listen

Colin and Izzy Griggs' traditional farming way of life is under threat from red tape. Colin just wants to farm and not be a pen-pusher. Desperate for new ideas, he takes inspiration from a doughnut and sets up a "Hole Farming Business".

His first job is to supply 18 holes for the newly refurbished golf course. Colin's ineptness leads to a number of incidents surrounding the grand opening, creating an archenemy of the Club's Captain, Major Woods.

His business is given a much needed boost by the arrival of Lady Wills into the Manor House. She requires holes for her ornate ponds, but before awarding the contract needs a reference from Colin's previous employer, Major Woods.

How will Colin manage to get the reference he needs to save his business? How exactly do you manage to farm holes? And who is really wearing the stockings in the Griggs household?

Set in the rural village of Henslow, The Hole Opportunity is a true English farce with miscommunication, double entendre, humorous plotlines, and a host of memorable characters.

Misunderstandings and entertaining situations

What did you like most about The Hole Opportunity?

I don’t know the author, other than via social media, but I was highly delighted to be gifted an audiobook copy of ‘The Hole Opportunity’ by the very generous James Mintner after an exchange on Goodreads. I don’t usually listen to audiobooks as I have little opportunity to do so but I thoroughly enjoyed the next couple of weeks of dog walks when I took ‘The Hole Opportunity’ with me.This is a book from a genre I would not usually choose but it just goes to show that you should always keep an open mind. It is a very British farce based on the genius idea of a farmer, Colin Griggs and his wife Izzy, wanting to diversify and subsequently coming up with the ‘hole’ business. It is far-fetched, obviously, this is a work of farce after all but it is carried off throughout with great ease and enthusiasm. The fully rounded characterisations are solid and stereotypical - just as they should be in this sort of story - you could picture each and every one brilliantly. This is a fun, light hearted book to read or listen to filled with misunderstandings and entertaining situations that involve the whole village, golf club, nearby country house, pub, bank...amongst others and a cast of ‘mostly’ likeable characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hole Opportunity?

The golf club scene - with the rabbits!!

What about Pete Nottage’s performance did you like?

Finally I thought the narration of the book by Pete Nottage was excellent, he has done a very good job and I was really impressed by this presentation of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I guess...if I ever had that time available, but it's over 10 hours long!
