أحبَّ قدماء المصريين الهدهد كثيرًا وهم الذين أطلقوا عليه هذا الاسم الذي انتشر وأصبح معروفًا به في كلّ لغات العالم وهم الذين اختاروه له إذ يترامى إلى آذانهم صوت نقراته لجذوع الأشجار مرددًا: هُد..هُد.
