About this listen

Deep underground, in a top-secret location, the war against terror, anarchy and foreigners in general is being waged. Inside The Hub, where intelligence gathering blends seamlessly with state-of-the-art, counter-terrorist hardware, dedicated professionals work day and night to keep us safe...and somehow always manage to totally screw things up. Health and Safety Officers insist on covert agents wearing hi-vis jackets, mad scientists invent edible time machines and the world is finally saved by a visiting postman.

24 meets Blackadder in this fast-paced, irreverent, madcap comedy, set in a world of secrets, shadows and utter stupidity.

I think it started out nicely, had a few chuckles, but by the time I got to the end I was just a bit bored. It was very predictable, you just sort of know what jokes they're gonna make.

I liked the different characters though, and the narrators all did a great job.

Predictable, but fairly enjoyable

certainly a format that could be developed with characters that are easily recognisable - unfortunately there is something depressingly unfunny about PC health and safety jokes owing to their prevalence. Actually what is missing here is real experience of the department being satirised.

An up dated Navy Lark

The Hub is funny enough - but lacks anything to distinguish it’s self from other radio comedy shows.

Usual

Daft goings on in the centre of the secret service and reminiscent of the long ago series, Men from the Ministry who were also totally incompetent though well meaning. Naturally, all of the personae were caricatures and the incidents rather ridiculous. Or were they? Mmm. I enjoyed this episode, even laughing out loud on occasion - something I rarely do. Moreover, it has potential to move forward, both with character development and a myriad of silly story circumstances. I would certainly listen again.

like an intelligence officer version of drop the dead Donkey but with less realistic characters

Drop The Dead Donkey - esque

I kept wanting to like thus more than I did but ultimately just didn't find it funny. Performance was generally fine.

What would have made The Hub better?

If it was funny

What will your next listen be?

Cannot imagine I would ever listen again - sorry.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Warned me not to waste time.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

Sorry to be so negative about someones work but it wasn't funny

Cliched

This was fairly funny, sending ths "Sas" type team to do the shopping amused me. Would have worked better for me if it had taken itself a little more seriously like Yes Minister

Made me smile a couple of times

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An interesting storyline.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Workmanlike performances.

Any additional comments?

Not a new idea, incompetent civil servants and pompous generals. The Piglet Files did it better and before that The Men from the Ministry.

Confused storyline and stereotypical characters

Would you try another book written by Bruce Windwood or narrated by the narrators?

Not on this showing.

What was most disappointing about Bruce Windwood’s story?

It was straight from the book of not how to write a story about the secret services, the MOD and secret government departments.

How could the performance have been better?

They might have rehearsed.

Do you think The Hub needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No

Any additional comments?

I had hoped for better.

Clichéd and predictable
