About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Inner Life of Animals by Peter Wohlleben, read by Thomas Judd.

Mother deer that grieve?

Horses that feel shame?

Squirrels that adopt their grandchildren?

We humans tend to assume that we are the only living things able to experience feelings intensely and consciously. But have you ever wondered what's going on in an animal's head?

From the leafy forest floor to the inside of a beehive, The Inner Life of Animals takes us from microscopic levels of observation to the big philosophical, ethical and scientific questions. We hear the stories of a grateful humpback whale, of a hedgehog who has nightmares and of a magpie who commits adultery; we meet bees that plan for the future, pigs who learn their own names and crows that go tobogganing for fun. And at last we find out why wasps exist.

As more and more researchers are discovering, animals experience a rich emotional life that is ready to be explored. The Inner Life of Animals will show you these living things in a new light and will open up the animal kingdom like never before.

A wonderful and witty insight into the world of animals, in a well performed and accessible manner. Relating concepts to everyday examples or sights we may all be familiar with.

Wonderful, witty and insightful

It's such a pleasure to learn about the emotional lives of animals through Wohlleben's illustrative narration. It's a pity to learn how little research has been done around the multifaceted and infinitely fascinating lives of animals, and I'm now lamenting my life choices.

A beautiful book, engagingly read.

If you've ever wondered how animals think and feel or if they even do so, then this book takes through a journey of his own and ponders the inner life of animals. brilliantly narrated and an interesting listen in general. Well worth a credit!

I loved how this flowed so easily between observations- a citizen science triumph. Gentle narration - full of delightful stories

Anthropomorphic anecdotes or widely-evidenced proof? Fascinating either way.

I fancied a quick trip down Animal Lane, a look at animal interactions and their worlds. This was brief but did give a lot of food for thought.

While it did feel like a fair few of these examples are possibly anecdotal, there was a fair amount of data and research here that really did show extraordinary possibilities of animals emotions, cognition and internal lives.

Regret? Shame? In the animal kingdom? Why not.

As a non-scientist I felt a bit of a yearning to read some biology journals for more information.
Nicely conveyed as an audiobook, though paper would have been useful for some data and numbers.

Well read and definitely a provoking volume.

Anthropomorphic or proof?

I enjoyed the book. But it’s mainly based on the author’s observations. I was hoping the book would go a little deeper into the subjects.

I think the audiobook was read a little fast for my taste. So I was disappointed that the book was read by someone else than the tree book, which was lovely.

Cute but not so deap
