About this listen

From the discovery of entirely new kinds of galaxies to a window into cosmic ‘prehistory’, Bothwell shows us the universe as we’ve never seen it before - literally.

Since the dawn of our species, people all over the world have gazed in awe at the night sky. But for all the beauty and wonder of the stars, when we look with just our eyes we are seeing and appreciating only a tiny fraction of the universe. What does the cosmos have in store for us beyond the phenomena we can see, from black holes to supernovas? How different does the invisible universe look from the home we thought we knew? Dr Matt Bothwell takes us on a journey through the full spectrum of light and beyond, revealing what we have learned about the mysteries of the universe.

This book is a guide to the 99 per cent of cosmic reality we can’t see - the universe that is hidden, right in front of our eyes. It is also the endpoint of a scientific detective story thousands of years in the telling. It is a tour through our invisible universe.

Critic reviews

"Matt Bothwell guides us through the world of astronomy and astrophysics with an engagingly written, up-to-date view of some of the key current frontiers. He opens our eyes to wavelengths beyond the light we can see. His journey includes galaxies, black holes, star formation, dust, gravitational waves, dark matter and dark energy - all with interesting historical context, accessible explanations and richly peppered with accurate analogies. Compelling." (Andrew Coates, professor of physics at UCL and deputy director (solar system) at UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory)

really enjoyed the easy to listen to book. Science was well explained for someone with only a little knowledge. I,ve suggested to my teenage child to listen to it.

The depth of knowledge and information built up gradually.

Thought provoking

I got this on a 2-for-1 deal as a makeweight and it was an inspired choice. My son & I share the same view of "dark matter" so I hoped this would explain it better. I've just got on to that section and already I understand more. I will recommend this book to my son to see what he thinks, though I am not altogether sure that I do not still regard "dark,,," as the modern day equivalent of phlogiiston.. This is definitely one I need to listen to again though.

Exactly what I wanted

Excellent basis to the understanding of Cosmology and the introduction to Quantum Mechanics .
Easy to listen too and well narrated.

Easy to understand

Brilliantly explicit. Bizarre is the appropriate word to describe the nature of reality. Science unearths reality in revealing simplicity. Matthew Bothwell grinds science to atoms for simple minds to digest.

AMAZING!

What a great listen and who would have thought that a subject so vast could be distilled into such a riveting and insightful story with a firm scientific basis - a story well told, well read and probably worth another listen.

Did what it said it did without patronising me or befuddling me. Well read with a captivating tone. Will give it a month, then will listen again.

detailed and comprehensive without the monotony.

Enchanting, enthralling and just what any person with an interest in our universe should listen to.

Exemplary

This was a well-read and well-researched look into the universe at large and was written in a way that was easy to follow along with. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to dip their toe into the physics pond as it isn't as daunting or as difficult as some of the other books out there on the subject

Informative and interesting
