About this listen

I hate Ripley Brewer.

So, why am I cuddling on his lap, peering into his ocean-blue eyes while cameras record our every move?

My best friend needs my help to save her career, and I would do anything for her. Besides, filming a reality show sounds fun … until Ripley shows up to play the role of my fake boyfriend.

As always, we nearly come to blows within minutes of seeing each other. The playboy billionaire accuses me of a setup, but I insist I’d rather live in a world without carbs than spend a minute with him.

At some point during the melee, we sign contracts. I can’t stand the look of his six feet two inches of chiseled abs and broad shoulders. And I loathe his arrogance. But now that he’s my pretend beau, I’m stuck acting like I’m falling in love with my biggest enemy.

It turns out that Ripley’s a good actor, too. Every soft touch on the small of my back makes my heart thump faster. His sultry smirk feels like it’s only for me. I should detest every word that passes his kissable lips.

Is this all a ruse, or does Ripley want to end this episode of The Invitation going from enemies to lovers? Because now? I’m not convinced I can despise him anymore.

Stand alone in series, forced proximity

The Invitation is the third book in the Brewer Family series. It can be read as a stand alone, but I do think it adds a little to the background for the story if you've read the prior books in the series first. The events of this story are entirely separate, so it's not required.

Ripley and Georgia begin the book at odd with each other, and we quickly find out that it's due to some misunderstandings on both their parts many years ago. The way the characters treated each other at the beginning made them seem immature, and I like that there was a lot of self-discovery and making conscious efforts to change for both Ripley and Georgia. I thought that the way the ending resolved was meaningful and unique, and I appreciate when characters resolve issues with communication.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jason Clarke and new-to-me Lexi Maynard. Lexi Maynard did well, and I thought it was an exceptional performance by Jason Clarke. He consistently does an excellent job making various character voices sound unique, and the delivery of the dialogue really conveyed the feelings behind the words (a bitter laugh, talking faster with excitement, etc.). The narration was really well done.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request, and the opinions here are my own.

Ripley and Georgia!

Georgia will do anything for those she cares about so when her best asks her to participate in a reality show she can’t say no. She might have felt different is she realized that her co-star would be Ripley who has been her biggest nemesis for years.

The one thing that Ripley and Georgia have in common is that he too will do anything for those he cares about. Finding out that they are about to be castmates doesn’t sit well with each of them, but they can be professional while on the set and enemies off however lines are about to get very blurry.

The banter between them is humorous and they are both dealing with some family drama. As they are forced to spend time together it allows them to look at their feelings and their relationship honesty and see what they truly mean to each other. Both narrators were a great choice for the characters as could feel the swoon from Ripley as well as the sass from Georgia.

“I’m sitting here right now hoping that it rains forever. Because if we walk out of here and I never get to experience this again. I want as many memories with you as I can get” Ripley and Georgia had been enemies since they met their senior year of High School. Ten years after, they are going to film a reality show where they fall in love. What’s going to happen when every time they are together they can’t help but fight each other? The audiobook is great. Lexi Maynard and Jason Clarke make an excellent job with all the feelings, banter and emotional moments in the story. Chapter nineteen, with an amazing Jason Clarke, is one of the best moments I’ve ever listened to.

The Invitation: The Brewer Family Series, Book 3 –

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

🎧 Okay, so here’s the thing, because I listened to this story, the audio production/narration is going to be a part of the calculation of the rating and also the review. The most diplomatic way to say what I need to say about narration is to just say that I did not not like it, but it was not a party in my ears. Fortunately, both Jason & Lexi required the same speed, so I didn’t have to continually go back and forth and change speeds. The main issue is that Lexi has a pause to her narration at just about every sentence, so it was hard to be in the moment with her. She came across as if she was reading and not performing and that isn’t my favorite experience when it comes to audiobooks. Honestly, if I wanted something merely read to me, I could just read the book out loud. Feel me? But let’s move …

📖 I really liked the story of Ripley and Georgia. I think it was a very creative way to mix enemies and close proximity together and have it come out realistic and organic. Obviously, with a close proximity situation, it forces all manner of circumstances to be front and center in life and when it comes to romance fiction, it allows the author to get to the “good stuff” earlier than if they weren’t forced together. No one wants to read 250+ pages of antagonism and just 25 of the good stuff and forced proximity allows you to even out the field in a story. Adriana did this well in this story. She took the time to develop their relationship properly from “enemies” to “friend(ish)” (lol) to “more”. I love when none of the steps are skipped, and circumstances are fully developed. It’s my #happyplace! With a perfect blend of tension and spark, laughter and heart, and a good dose of family goodness, The Invitation needs to be a must read for everyone!

⭐ About the rating … I hate rating books because it is completely subjective so therefor it’s a measurement of nothing! That being said, the total package for me is a solid 3.5 stars with narration being 3 stars and story being 4 stars, and since the story was such a delight, I am rounding +up+ because half stars are not a thing! :) These are my 2 cents, don’t spend them all at once!

4.5 Stars!

Ripley and Georgia have known each other since high school, and have not gotten along since then due to some misunderstandings. In fact, they always seem to argue when in proximity. And due to them having mutual friends, they are forced to see each other and spend time with each other every so often. When Georgia’s best friend needs help with a new TV dating show pilot she is working on, she asks Georgia and Ripley, and they reluctantly agree to fake date on the dating show. What’s more, Georgia’s mom knows of Ripley and his family and has forbidden her to date him.

I am really loving this series. No one writes cute, back-and-forth banter, but still with emotion like Adriana Locke. I loved how the story was all woven together. Ripley feels disposable next to his siblings who all have roles in the family business. He feels that he doesn’t quite offer as much contribution to his family as the rest of his siblings. This, combined with the complicated relationship he has with his father, has left him feeling not too great. Meanwhile, Georgia is not having the best few months. She is sweet but feisty. Having been raised by a selfish and not the most nurturing mother, she also has a complicated relationship with her, but she is loyal since it’s her only family. This leaves her reluctant to trust others. To make matters worse, she is currently unemployed. This sense of loyalty (and unemployment on Georgia’s end) is what leads them both to help Georgia’s bestie out with her reality dating show pilot. As a result of this forced proximity, the shenanigans of the book ensue.

I really loved watching Ripley and Georgia fake date and seeing that bring them together and falling in love. I also appreciated them finally talking it out and sorting out their misunderstands and issues. This one had such fun vibes, so much humour, and banter, and some great emotions and character growth. If you love enemies (frenemies) to lovers, second chance romances, with lots of banter and fun moments, pick this one up, you won’t be disappointed.

Narrated by Jason Clarke and Lexi Maynard. They were amazing as Ripley and Georgia respectively. Clarke was great at portraying the loyal and sweet nature of Ripley. Maynard also did amazingly with showing all the facets of Georgia’s personality; from her feistiness and sass to the wariness when it came to trusting others, but also the sweetness that she had. They were both excellent at evoking all the emotions the characters had and were able to bring the story to life.
