About this listen

Dawn of Fire Book 5

A depleted Battle Group Praxis returns the slain heir of Kamidar to the Knight world's ruling family – and its embittered ruler, the Iron Queen Orlah.

Listen to it because

Nick Kyme continues the story of the Indomitus Crusade, as a vicious feud breaks out on the Knight world of Kamidar – and the agents of Abaddon are only too happy to stoke the flames.

The story

A war-weary Battle Group Praxis arrives at the Knight world of Kamidar, ruled by the Iron Queen Orlah, to return the queen's slain daughter and heir, who died in Guilliman's name. In truth, the Imperium's mission here is twofold: to strip Kamidar of its resources in order to resupply the flagging armada, and to prepare the Ironhold Protectorate to become part of the defensive Anaxian Line, a crucial bulwark for the Indomitus Crusade.

Yet Kamidar's Knights have survived for many years without the Imperium's aid, and what should have been a simple reunion between allies soon becomes a vicious feud. As division turns loyal souls against one another, the agents of Abaddon move in the shadows, seeking to manipulate this growing rift to their own ends. Can the Imperium restrain itself from laying an old ally asunder, or will the Hand of Abaddon arise triumphant, halting the Avenging Son's reclamation in its path?

Despite what others say, saying this book is irreverent to the whole Dawn of fire story, it is a good side story, showing the struggles of the crusade. Highlighting that other fleets might face the same struggles, and its potential implications to the whole story!

Good side story

Obviously there's a plot and I don't believe it to be badly written, nicely narrated.
But im just not sure there was a need for this book, tbh I have very little idea how this links/evolves the story of this series!

Was there an series evolution...?

Feels a bit disjointed and more like a stand alone space marine battles novel. Doesn’t really move the narrative along which I thought was the point in this series.

Never really got going

Nick Kyme is arguably one of the worst HH/WH authors. I have not read or listened a Kyme book I liked. I tried to listen to the blue bloods book, I really did, it was just so boring.
I've read the words 'lives' and 'Vulkan' enough times to get an attack of the cringe when anyone uses those words together. Every Kyme book is an absolute horror show, with stories like his, every day is halloween.

So i was very surprised when I managed to finish this one without getting attacks of the cringe variety. Nick Kyme managed to squeeze out a solid 3 star story... perhaps even 3&⅜. I was pleasantly surprised. Didn't think Kyme had it in him. This goes on and he'll reach the Guymer/Annandale level of 50/60 hit&miss.

In case you are a completionist like me, it's not a bad purchase. It's entertaining at times.

The queen is all off-with-their-heads because she is a one dimensional caricature of a female with pms. Trouble ensues, but it's mostly because of the one dimensional caricatures if a-hole males. What will the one dimensional good guys do? Robby G does not make an appearance.

Kyme squeezes out another one.

Good story but lacked the punch the other books in the series have. I would recommend this is a splitter book rather than following the series story arc.

Not the best in the series.

Complete filler. Doesn't advance the story. Could have been excellent if they have looked at the politics and the traedy and ingored chaos sub plot.

all filer

Not sure if I listened to the same story as other reviewers. Great to catchup with some of the characters from earlier books especially the 84th Mordian & Sgt Kesh. Some great intrigue and action scenes!

Amazing

As a standard alone it was very good, gave an Insight into Knight world's and how small things can start wars. But...

I know these books do not 100% follow on from one another, but this book sort of felt like a filler. Didn't really move the story one. Granted, the chaos portion fits in with the Ark of Omen series, but it sort of felt like an add on.

As alway the preformance of John Banks was excellent. In my view he should do all GW audio books. 😁

I didn’t get this book at all. There are a lot of elements that make no sense with how the space marines are severely played down and how the majority of female characters are really played up. The custodian, the marines are all just throw away and poorly written. Nick Kyme has not done a good job here.
I don’t think lore was really at the forefront of Nicks mind and it suffers for it.
Overall poorly written, pointless entry in what has been an ok series, I worry for the next books.

War for war sake
