About this listen

When a broken engagement leads to murder, Miss Silver hunts for the killer.

Bill Waring went to America with a bright future ahead of him. In London, he had a promising career and the love of a young beauty, Lila Dryden, and there were plans for marriage when he returned from overseas.

But then a freak train accident puts their happiness on hold. Bill spends a month in the hospital, and when he finally makes it back to London, there is a still bigger shock awaiting him. Under pressure from a domineering aunt, Lila has become engaged to another. She and her new fiancé - middle aged, charmless, and rich - are in the country for the weekend. Bill follows, determined to win back Lila's heart. But when her new betrothed is stabbed to death, blame falls squarely on Bill, and only the brilliant, demure detective Maud Silver can clear his name.

Another enjoyable tale with Miss Silver and familiar characters. Dated but atmospheric. Narration enhanced the story.

Familiar

I love love love these books and Diana Bishop’s narration is without question the most credible I’ve heard in a long time.
The plot was clever, the characters well written and the denouement unexpected…I can’t get enough of these books. Thank you Patricia Wentworth

Every one a winner!

Loved it. Good story, great narration. All is so nicely old fashioned; the setting, the language, behaviour. the narration complements the content. Very soothing. Much recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining with final plot twists worthy of the best mystery writers.

I do love Diana Bishop's gentle narration of these soppy stories. They are very dated and always revolve around unrequited love which then is requited. This one had a lot of promise but came to an abrupt and disappointing end.

Twisty and turny as always but disappointing end

Diana Bishop reads very well. Patricia Wentworth is an excellent mystery writer. Creates atmosphere with few words and draws you in. Enjoy 😉

Excellent to the end.

For Patricia Wentworth fans this is similar to all the rest! Attitudes are of their time but I like listening to as an insight to social mores & habits of the period albeit usually set in Stately Homes…. If you’re an Agatha Christie fan then you may enjoy Patricia Wentworth. What is more she was writing during the same time period & Muss Silver is a veritable Miss Marple. I am amazed that I had never heard of her & Agatha Christie got all the game

Comfort listen

I enjoy the rapport between Miss Silver and Frank Abbott, a comfortably old fashioned listen.

Very enjoyable
