Summary

Like Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' groundbreaking On Death and Dying, Susan Anderson's book clearly defines the five phases of a different kind of grieving - grieving over a lost relationship. An experienced professional who has specialized in helping people with loss, heartbreak, and abandonment for more than two decades, Anderson gives this subject the serious attention it deserves. The Journey from Abandonment to Healing is designed to help all victims of emotional breakups - whether they are suffering from a recent loss or a lingering wound from the past; whether they are caught up in patterns that sabotage their own relationships or they are in a relationship where they no longer feel loved. From the first stunning blow to starting over, this book provides a complete program for abandonment recovery.

Understands the impact of abandonment

Deep and well-researched with a great understanding of the feelings and effects of being neglected and abandoned. Feels a little dated but still good.

Really excellent accompaniment to painful divorce

My ten year marriage broke down unexpectedly and felt very hurt, listless and abandoned. This book broke down ten stages of my grief in a comforting way and reassured me that what I was feeling was normal, predictable and surmountable. It’s a bit dated in parts as the author seems obsessed by weight gain and now being fat is very negative but if you can overlook that I would highly recommend.

Tools to understanding grief

I have been dealing with grief for as long as I remember. Different levels, situations, etcetera. It compounds almost as easy as debt does.
I have managed to hide and somewhat ignore that grief for just as long.
What really broke me truly and fully was divorce.
As bad as this sounds, not even losing family members hurt this much.
This book helped me understand my feelings and reactions, so thank you for that. It’s not a cure-all, everything needs work.
The hurt is still there but now I understand what it is, and how to deal with it better.
I had to take off one star, the repetition of that one word/term is really grating on my nerves.

Loved it

Loved it, recommend this book. Its helped me see myself in a better light. The only adjustment I have made is that I don't blame my outer child. I understand the communication behind her behaviour and her need for acceptance too

Life affirming

I think Susan Anderson wrote this book after observing my first 50 years of life. I feel someone understands me & wants to put a caring arm around my shoulder.
