A Truly Amazing Listen

I have listened to a few books written by John Holt. And I have to say that this book has become one of my favorites. The characters of the book were each given their own highlights in the story - it made me connect with each of them more. Though some parts of the novel happened during World War II, it was not a war story. It was intriguing from the start and I got really hooked to it.

The narration was great, as well. Ben Werling has an attention-grabbing kind of voice and he was really good at doing different accents. The background sound was a brilliant addition. I liked it that I was hearing train whistles, water splashes and other sounds - because it made the book more interesting and entertaining for me.

This book truly deserves Five-Star reviews! Highly recommended!

Couldn’t have been writing better !

I love WWII stories and only John Holt the author got this talent that make it sound like a documentary.
I’m so glad to have had the privilege of listening to this audiobook, the story is incredible, it totally pulls you in with all the twists like a story in a story in a story, truly beautifully done.
Choosing Ben Werling for narration was an excellent decision, I also loved the background sounds also beautifully done.

Absolutely, full heartedly recommend this audiobook for all.

Had me glued from the beginning!

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down. I loved how they told the story of the present time, giving hints about the past, and then telling each individual Soldier's Story. for once I had no questions at the end of the book. I would definitely recommend this book anyone especially those who like War Stories!

Really absorbing!

This story was beautifully told over two time zones. Mid sixties treasure hunters and the last few months of a WWII military base and it’s personnel. A complex tale of greed, murder, blackmail and time brining all things into focus. It could almost be a true story as it’s so convincingly portrayed. John Holt can certainly write interesting dialogue and Ben Werling can just as certainly deliver it. Although not a war story as such, it does still give the atmosphere of the confusion and panic in the closing days of that terrible time. Certainly an enjoyable book, well worth buying.

Not my usual genre but got involved.

This was a fascinating story, well written and I got really involved in wanting to know what happens next. I would never normally listen or read to a WW11 book, so for me to like it - it shows that it can appeal to different people. The narrator was new to me but I quickly got used to his style and it really did work.

Hidden Gold, Nazis, Secrets and Revenge.

This adventure, crime, mystery story starts as a modern day treasure hunt around a lake in Austria before travelling back in time to the end of WW2 and a secret test facility, Nazi gold, counterfeit currency and murder. The story is told from several perspectives, immersing the reader deep into the psych of the characters. The narration is excellent ensuring a good pace and characterization. Even the background sound effects enhance the enjoyment.

The Kammersee Affair

This book was a little hard for me in the beginning because there was so much going on and a bit of hopping from one person to another but once I figured out who was who it was much better. This story was very interesting to listen to. I don’t usually do much history based things but feel the descriptions of the places and times were really good. Also the accents but the narrator were spot on. This recording has some sound affects but not too much or overly loud compared to the narration and I was pleasantly surprised that I liked them. It made you feel like you were more involved with the story. Overall this was a fun listen that anyone who enjoys things based in history will want to listen.

Just superb. Starting simply with the experiences of three young Austrian students in 1955, following rumours of lost German treasure in the area of Lake Topletz, this part alone merits the star rating. The tension is electric, encouraged both by the narration and a gentle background sound track, as the three dive and explore with metal detectors, uncovering what had to have been the old marine weapons test centre known to have been located there but subsequently destroyed. Then the time frame is switched back to the last months of WWII, the Test Centre itself and those working within it before following the individual lives of four American soldiers who had found the building just after it's abandonment.

The characterization is good, especially tracking the soldiers. Natural conversation and reactions from all of them, including the often muddled thought processes inside their heads. The adventure, although essentially a simple but good one, fully holds the reader's attention, pieces of the of the story being released through the book until the jigsaw picture is finally complete. And throughout the excellent narration by Ben Werling, there also runs a subtle reinforcing soundtrack.

This is a book to experience not just to hear, and recommended to all who enjoy mystery thrillers especially those interested both in relic searches and the lives of soldiers in the latter part of, and following, war.
