1939: Nerys Watkins leaves rural Wales to accompany her husband on a missionary posting to India. Travelling from lonely Ladakh, high in the Himalayas, Nerys discovers a new world in the city of Srinagar.

Here, in the exquisite heart of Kashmir, the British live on carved wooden houseboats and dance, flirt and gossip as if there is no war. But the battles draw ever closer. I had already read the book but so wished to read it again. It was beautifully narrated and I think it would make avery good film.
A beautiful story with so many depths

This book was definitely not what I was expecting.

It was quite atmospheric, the descriptions of India and the process of making the shawls was interesting.

The characters were deep and interesting and the plot just gripping enough to keep you listening.

But at five hundred pages it was far too long. The pacing was an issue as the story wound on. I found Maire's sections less interesting then Nerys's.

It's an emotionally difficult story and so quite dissatisfying in that their are a lot of tragic occurrences and unhappy endings.

The mystery surrounding the shawl and the lock of hair was quite exciting but didn't make up for the pacng.

Overall it was a well written and interesting story but quite underwhelming.

I was happy to give this book a five star rating as the story is really sweet and quite intricate. I like books that have and amount of truth and honesty about them and the story sounds very closable as well as being fantastic at the same time. I don't want to spoil the ending but I would love to have seen two of the characters meeting but I suppose this is part of the appeal that they didn't. Enjoy it.
