About this listen
It is 1901 in the gold fields of the Yukon Territory where driven men cheat and steal in their quest of these yellow nuggets. In the midst of this madness, John Caldwell arrives to mine, after a narrow escape from death in the South African war. He soon ends this attempt and embarks on a new venture, to protect miners from theft. When his first client is robbed of a large amount of gold, John is off and in search of these criminals. Unfortunately, these robbers were funding a conspiracy to seize the Yukon Territory and John is recruited by the North West Mounted Police to chase them from King Solomon's Dome and into the Alaskan Territory by steamship and horse, aided by American infantry. He sometimes acts without thinking, such as ramming a gold filled launch, finding a cadaver in a mine shaft and annoying his superiors. This pursuit takes him into shady dealings with mining properties and the craziness of miners, crooks, and ladies of the bars and dance halls in Dawson City. He encounters an attractive agent from the Pinkerton's Detective Agency, who is always one step ahead of him until she is captured and it is up to John to rescue her when they were both left to die in the wilderness. This accurate retelling of the gold rush is both an adventure and a detective story that brings alive the wonderful characters and events of that time. The book is suitable for young adults and anyone who enjoys a romp through that long ago era of suspense and adventure.
