Summary
‘Not long,’ he says very quietly. ‘They have confirmed your sentence of death. You are to be beheaded tomorrow. We don’t have long at all.’
Jane Grey was Queen of England for nine days. Using her position as cousin to the deceased king, her father and his conspirators put her on the throne ahead of the king’s half-sister Mary, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her crown and locked Jane in the Tower. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner’s block. There Jane turned her father’s greedy, failed grab for power into her own brave and tragic martyrdom.
‘Learn you to die’ is the advice that Jane gives in a letter to her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. She intends to enjoy her beauty and her youth and find love. But her lineage makes her a threat to the insecure and infertile Queen Mary and, when Mary dies, to her sister Queen Elizabeth, who will never allow Katherine to marry and produce a potential royal heir before she does. So when Katherine’s secret marriage is revealed by her pregnancy, she too must go to the Tower.
‘Farewell, my sister,’ writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary finds it easy to keep secrets, especially her own, while avoiding Elizabeth’s suspicious glare. After watching her sisters defy the queen, Mary is aware of her own perilous position as a possible heir to the throne. But she is determined to command her own destiny and be the last Tudor to risk her life in matching wits with her ruthless and unforgiving cousin Elizabeth. Read by Bianca Amato, narrator of Three Sisters, Three Queens and The Taming of the Queen.

Very enjoyable and easy to listen to
I am generally very interested in the tudors so perhaps I was predisposed to like this book. When I decided to listen to it I had been looking for a book with a thought provoking story, without being too much of a challenge and it far exceeded this brief. It made my daily commute so much more enjoyable and at the same time, I learnt about a significant family in history who have been all but hidden and realised a different side to queen Elizabeth. I am sad it is over!

The Last Tudor
A brilliant insight into the Tudor court and Elizabeth I's selfish rule over England, her court and her subjects.

Wonderful
It never occurred to me to wonder what became of Jane Grey's younger sisters .... a dark and tragic story that I found difficult to put down. Absolutely loved it!

A small criticism
I have been listening to this title for a short while. I am, in fact, only up to Chapter 12, but I am becoming increasingly irritated by the fact that, at the start of each Chapter (and possibly, sometimes, paragraph or section) the first word is missing. It may be "I" or "The", or some other equally short word, and so it does not interfere with the plot or my enjoyment of the story, but it is just so annoying that I am almost listening for the next omission.
This is not the first title about which I have noticed this problem. I cannot believe that my Kindle Fire is at fault, as the recordings are out of my control and transmission to the device is directly from Audible. I wonder if Audible could look into and correct this anomaly; not just in this title but in others which may suffer from the same abnormality in recording.
Having reported the above, I must add that I am enjoying the story, the reading and the listening, and I hope this will continue as I proceed through this moving and compelling piece of history.

Philippa Gegory at her best
What a saga, so well read, I found I had to listen wherever I was. Enjoyed every minute. Such a talented author, and now on to the next saga!
