About this listen

Elizabeth's eyes have failed. She can no longer read the books she loves or see the paintings that move her, but her mind remains sharp, and music fills the vacancy left by her blindness.

When her father's journals are discovered on a shipwrecked boat, she enlists the help of a delinquent teen, Morgan, to read to her. As an unlikely friendship grows between them, Elizabeth is carried back to her childhood home - the lighthouse on Porphyry Island, Lake Superior - and to the memory of her enigmatic twin sister, Emily.

But for Elizabeth, the faded pages of her father's journals reveal more secrets than she anticipates.

Read by Laurel Lefkow.

Great story, atrocious recording

Spellbinding story, beautifully written, with the listening experience ruined by terrible editing. Sentences are repeated on several occasions and words are mis-pronounced, distracting from the story. Agree with another reviewer that mid-paragraph the narrator changes, or the audio output changes so drastically it sounds like a different person has taken up the story. My first experience of a bad recording and I only ploughed on because I had to finish the book for my book group and knew I would not have time to sit and read the book to the end.

Enchanting

I loved the story with its unexpected twists. It's a shame some lines were repeated in the reading as it jolted you out of the feelings and imagery conjured up by the prose. Will definitely look for more by this author.

Wonderful story

I really enjoyed this story from start to finish. So rare for a book to end this well.
I just wish the author had more adult fiction to read.

Brilliant story, poor editing

I really enjoyed the story, but the poor editing was irritating - many mistakes still present with the corrected version repeated afterwards.

A captivating story, full of unexpected twists and turns

I so enjoyed this story from start to finish. With an exciting and unpredictable storyline enhanced by sympathetic characters cleverly interwoven through time, and with beautiful descriptions of the life, history and landscapes around Lake Superior, this is altogether one of the best books I’ve read in years.

Was the Audio Proofer Asleep or What?

This is a beautiful novel, the story so cleverly intertwined between the experiences of Elizabeth and Morgan, and in the end very little is as it first seems. I loved the book and the reading of it too, but...... I don't think this recording has been audio proofed, which, for a work of this quality, is pretty disgraceful. There are numerous double takes, one of which should have been edited out after proofing. The recording levels are not consistent either. This is not Audible's fault as they would have purchased it trusting that it had been professionally processed but having been made aware of the problems I think Audible owes it to the author, the narrator and the listener to sort this out and have it revisited and cleaned up. But despite all this, I was still able to enjoy the performance and the novel. An unusual and very worthwhile listen.
