About this listen

Maggie Wilson was only 33, but life in the teeming streets of Walworth was not that easy in 1908 - not if you were a widow with four young daughters. It was pretty much a hand-to-mouth existence, and without the lodger Maggie really wouldn't have managed at all.

Constable Harry Bradshaw thought the Wilsons were a gutsy and brave little family - from the youngest and cheekiest, Daisy, up to the elegant Trary, 13 years old and quite the young lady. But the one who won most of his admiration was Maggie herself, fighting her lonely battle against total poverty.

And his fears for her concerned more than just their lack of money. For a murderer was loose in South London - a rather sinister strangler who obviously knew the local streets and alleys very well indeed. A full-scale investigation was put in hand, and Harry was told, in particular, to inquire into any new lodgers who had moved into the district. And there was something very peculiar indeed about Maggie Wilson's lodger.

I can’t express how much I enjoyed this book. It was funny, and gripping. The narrator was fantastic the best I have heard. I really didn’t want it to end.

An absolute joy.

I liked everything about this whole story, it’s the first time I have listened to one of her books and did so from reading the reviews, I love learning about the life in London through a story and this one did not disappoint me. The twist and turns kept you on your toes and it had a very good ending, throughly enjoyed listening to it and will be down loading my next read and chance another one of hers, well worth a listen I could not turn it off.

The lovely voice of the narrator and a man for a change

This is the only male narrated book by MJS that I have listened to. It was an absolute delight and totally different from the fabulous Adams family saga series. I cannot recommend highly enough.

could not stop listening

I didn’t want to leave the series but this was a great story and likeable mix of characters. Twists and turns and a good thread that kept interest all the way through. Downside is I want to purchase all the rest now!

A great story if you’ve just finished The Adams Family series

Absolutely loved this book. I generally go for nitty gritty thrillers but this was a book full of absolute charm along with a great story.
I’m now a diehard fan.

What a wonderful story, read by an extraordinarily brilliant narrator.

I love listening to Mary Jane Staples books, of course the creme de creme was the Adams family but this one was just as good. So nice to hear a male narrator occasionally

Excellent book
