I loved the dilemmas and the portrayal of the characters.

Everyone struggles with this narrator who pronounces so many words completely bizarrely! However, she DOES act the male and female voices excellently and each is different t. My tip is to speed up the narration to about 1.3 or 1.4.

There are still oddities but then the American authors always get a lot of period detail and language wrong, or their editors butcher their writing for a US audience (please stop it whoever is ‘responsible’: your readers are not so foolish as to struggle to understand that people spoke differently is Regency England from how they do in modern America!).

Overall a nice tale and it sets the scene for the later stories.

Good characters and a happy ending

The narrator has such a strangely sibilant way of speaking, twisting vowels out of recognition. She is trying to imitate an English accent but it is so awful that I can’t listen to any more. Back is not pronounced bark. Father is not pronounced Fother etc etc. It interferes with the story, which in itself is packed with historical inaccuracy and unlikely behaviours. That said, it would probably be an okay listen but I can’t stand the narrator any more, and will avoid this narrator in the future.

Really Appalling Narration

No problem with the story. But the narration ... she pronounces so many vowels wrongly that I nearly gave up in irritation. Clearly English is not her first language. Here are a few examples: back pronounced as bark, hat as hart, calm as corm, father as fother, and numberless others. Make sure you try a sample first.

I loved the story, Erica Vetch writes a smashing story. This is fortunate because the narrator, Mary Sarah can surely never have heard a native English speaker. She does do marvellous character voices but her general style of reading often sounds distracted, Her pronunciation is bizarre. At first I thought a woman with a lace carp was wearing a fish on her head.
I still recommend this book though. Erica Vetch deserves better than she may be getting due to the narrator

I really struggled to get through this book because of the narration. It sounded very much like she was faking and overdoing the accent. Words like father and Kathy were pronounced fother and Kaathy.
Other than that the story is really good, just a shame that it is diminished by the distracting performance.

Narrator's accent made it difficult at times to hear and understand the story. Singsong voice seemed inappropriate to storyline. It seemed at times as if she was mocking the plotline when she announced a new chapter.
