A friend has your back.

And may stab you in it.

Wealthy, pampered Susan is living the perfect life in leafy Kingston. She'll never let anyone see the darkness she's concealing behind the diamonds and rosé.

Grace is new to the group, seemingly the perfect wife and mum. Yet no one knows the truth of what’s happening behind closed doors.

Loner Natalie hides the pain of her childhood behind a carefully ordered life. But how long can the past stay hidden?

Three unlikely friends, brought together for a weekly class run by beautiful, friendly, instructor, Jade.

But when Jade goes missing in mysterious circumstances, the group starts to unravel. And as their darkest secrets come to light, it seems that no one can be trusted. Even their closest friends...

A labyrinthine thriller

The Loyal Friend is a sophisticated story of deception and revenge, seen through the eyes of three principal characters, who are outwardly linked by their fitness class. They all have their own agendas and are all unreliable narrators. As a result of the traumas they’ve suffered or the lies they’ve been told or tell themselves, their inner dialogue is a labyrinth of false realities that wrap the reader in a net of deceit. Just when you think you know where you are A. A. Chaudhuri turns the story on it’s head and then pulls the rug out from under you.

Ignorant rehashing of prejudices against the mentally ill

I forced myself to listen to the end of this to check it really was as bad as it appeared in its lazy reliance on the ignorant fear of the mentally ill. Those of us abused in childhood are statistically far more likely to hurt ourselves than other people, and this kind of storytelling perpetuates the prejudices that are an added burden for all child abuse survivors. Ugh.
