About this listen

Seven train robbers. One haunted locomotive. All aboard for terror.

In the spring of 1903, locomotive 311, known as the Majestic, carried more than one hundred passengers toward a tunnel through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. But then the mouth of the tunnel swallowed the 311 whole, and the train—and everyone on it—was never seen again. Seven years later, a gang of cattle thieves and cutthroats wait on horseback for a train car full of railway cash—a payroll they intend to steal. What they will discover, however, is that the approaching train isn’t the 5409. It’s the missing 311, a train only whispered about around dying campfires. A train that some believe still rides the iron rails, traveling to places no mortal should ever go, seeing things no one should ever see.

Acclaimed horror writer Keith C. Blackmore etches an unsettling new entry in the annals of the American West. And like the haunted train itself, this one never stops.

Up there with the Mountain Man

It’s a western with a difference…cattle rustlers, a disappeared train, mutant passengers a snake plus an Archie are just some of the treats to explore within this book. It’s over the top, holds your attention, the moons a balloon…whalers… Just buy it and listen…if you know the authors other work then you know what your getting…R C Bray hits it out of the field…brilliant!

An enjoyable one off.

It's a strange listen, but is enjoyable. Some very interesting environments I wish had been further explored but overall a fun listen.

The synopsis is misleading

I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of the Mountain Man series & R C Bray has never put a foot wrong.
Firstly, Bray is awesome as always so no complaints there. My main gripe is that the synopsis made this sound like a classic Western ghost story when in reality it's like a jumbled sci fi mess that never really gets going.

The first part of the book when they're waiting to board the train is exactly what I was hoping for. Cool characters bitching and moaning at each other and going over the plan to rob the train.

Then they board the train and it all falls apart. I'm going to give a few examples because I'd have liked something like this in the synopsis, so stop reading now if you want to go in blind.

The different carriages they go through include: The belly of a giant sea creature, The scorching beach of a planet with 6ft man eating crabs. An alien bar with sexy multi breasted alien women.
There are also scenes from the perspective of a chrome alien called Vog Hertz Vog which are really random.

If the above sounds intriguing then maybe this is the book for you. For me I felt the synopsis was misleading and I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known what it was really about

A good paced story that thunders on like the 311!

An enjoyable tale that keeps up its momentum throughout and reminds me of time bandits except with cowboys.
It had the feeling of a book that would transition to film or series very easily and I'm sure would be a big hit.

Narrated very well, story was a bit odd.

So the idea of cowboy train robbing gone wrong had me hooked, love things like that and the narrator does a very good job. I feel like, story wise, it's maybe a mishmash of different ideas, there were quite a few loose ends that weren't tied up and there were a few points where I didn't know what was going on. I guess with a haunted train you can let the imagination run wild but it became sci-fy for a long while and then just jumped back.
It was a fairly interesting listen but I think if it wasn't for Bray's voice I wouldn't have finished it.

Gripping stuff

This is not my usual genre but RC Bray is always a draw. So I took a chance with this and thoroughly enjoyed it. Suspend your belief and enjoy some good old fashioned storytelling. Would recommend.

Another Great Read By Blackmore

The perfect pairing in Keith C. Blackmore and R.C. Bray does it again! Listened to this in a day. There's just something about the way Blackmore writes and R.C. Bray performs that makes for a brilliant listen. I wasn't expecting the twists and turns this story took, but I want to know more about those worlds!

I just couldn't ...

I love this duo of author and narrator, usually.
But this book did nothing for me whatsoever; think i managed a few chapters and i hated it.
And yet Moutain Man series i have read about five times as its brilliant.

What a load of rubbish

I purchased this because of the narrator.
The story starts really well but then goes into a rapid decline of complete nonsense
