About this listen

Five years ago, 14-year-old Max Wheeler disappeared from Priest's Island, an isolated but bleakly beautiful place on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the close-knit local community, there are no secrets - except what happened to Max. None of the police or private investigations since have shed any light on what happened the night he went missing, presumed dead. But there is one man who is yet to take on the case: The Sea Detective.

Cal McGill is an oceanographer and unique investigator who uses his knowledge of tides, winds and currents to solve mysteries no one else can. However, Cal is an unwelcome stranger who must navigate the tensions between Max's inconsolable father, the broken family he has neglected and the embittered locals, resentful after years of suspicion. As Cal arrives, a violent storm approaches, threatening to completely cut off the island, with a possible murderer at large....

well written, characters strong and plot beautifully woven.A really good 'read'. the narration was the icing on the cake.

Another stunning episode in the life of Cal McGill

A bold, atmospheric, intelligent, intense, and utterly compelling crime story. This third book in the series did not disappoint. Can't wait for the next in the series! A fabulous 'read'. Highly recommended.

Damp squib

I did enjoy the previous books by Mark Douglas-Home, but I think the first one was the best to date.

There are interesting stories in this book but it does not seem to form a tight whole. I went off it for some months but came back to finish it. Characters from previous books have been developed, giving continuity, and the landscape and weather are other important/interesting factors as in the previous books; but, with a cast of new, unsympathetic characters, my interest was not gripped. It was a not a compelling tale! The narrator could not do much to breath life into it either.

Transporting

I must say I love getting lost in this series of books. They do transport you to a different place.

Superb

Excellent story, good narration...... And Cal makes me want to take him home! He is lovely, and intelligent. The story kept my interest, in fact I finished it in a day and am sorely disappointed that there is no 4th book, yet?

Another engrossing story

Great combination of story and narration. Sad reflection on dis functional family and social prejudice. The scientific / forensic undertones add a depth and colour often lacking in other stories. Personally like the remote location with its associated serenity and the underlying unpredictable malevolence of nature

Weak story - disappointing

As usual the narration was exceptional but sadly the story line was weak. The previous 2 stories were very good but I didn’t enjoy this one. However because of the excellent narration I completed the book.

Another excellent instalment

I'm so glad I discovered this author. I love the sea detective series and this third instalment in the series is every bit as good as the first two. Mark Douglas Home writes so well and has such insight into human character, plus David Monteath's narration is perfect for these books. I also enjoy learning so much about the Scottish islands, their wildlife and the sea itself. Can't wait for the next book!

Another great story from Mark Douglas Home

A good tale, great narration, I felt I was there and could really envisage the location. So enjoyable and a great twist.
