About this listen
New York City, New York.
Meet Augustus Berrycloth-Young - fop, flaneur, and Englishman abroad - as he chronicles the Jazz Age from his perch atop the city that never sleeps.
That is, until his old friend Thomas Nightingale arrives, pursuing a rather mysterious affair concerning an old saxophone - which will take Gussie from his warm bed, to the cold shores of Long Island, and down to the jazz clubs where music, magic, and madness haunt the shadows...
Discover why this incredible series has sold over two million copies around the world. If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams - don't panic - you will love Ben Aaronovitch's imaginative, irreverent and all-round irresistible novels.

I hope this is the start of a series
Omg Gussie, Coco, Lucy! I want more of this. Kobna is a genius. I always feel safe losing myself in a Ben Aaronovitch world.

The Nightingale and 'Bertie Wooster'
Fun and lively story running wild in the jazz age. This book is definitely up there with the author's wondrous predecessors. The narrator is extraordinary talented and I adore the pops of jazz music.

A Spendid Masquerade!
I must admit to initially being unsure of this addition to The Rivers of London canon as Gussie didn't seem as interesting a character as Peter Grant, Abigail or even Kimberley, and the setting was also unfamiliar.
However, as the story progressed, Ben weaved in details about 1920s era New York, and brought in a whole cast of new characters to add depth, including the valet Beauregard, who is here clearly playing Jeeves to Gussie's Bertie Wooster.
I wouldn't class it as among the best of the series, but that may be mostly due to its length, as a full novel would have likely felt more substantial and satisfying. While I enjoy Ben's novellas, I hope that we will have more full length additions in the near future.
In terms of the audio rendition, it will probably surprise no one that Kobna Holbrook-Smith's performance is as flawless as ever, whether embodying Nightingale's upper class English tones, or a whole variety of American accents.
