About this listen

Warwickshire, 1840s: boys are destined for the pit and girls for the mill. Despite this, Maryann is happy there - until her mother dies. Her family collapses, leaving Maryann exhausted, and Toby, the boy she is set on marrying, insists they wait.

Then Maryann is offered a position as nanny to the daughter of the mill owner, Wesley Marshall, who Maryann grows unexpectedly close to. But their relationship doesn’t go unnoticed, threatening to unleash a world of problems on them all....

The mill girl

Another lovely book by Rosie Goodwin and so far all of her books I've listen to have been read by the same person Charlie Sanderson which I like. I just love look into my ancestry & this one I certainly found of interest the prison although not mentioned was Winston Green just outside Birmingham and until it was revamped was certainly a chilling place. My late father-in-law went in there and he would say how it terrified him when he heard them whipping the prisoners with "the cat of nine tails".
I would highly recommend this book.

Great book

This is a brilliant story. I was hooked on it right up to the very end. Charlie Sanderson is a brilliant narrator. The ending is very sad though. I must recommend it.

Lovely story

Rosie never gives her characters an easy time of it but it’s all ok in the end

Lovely story

Once again, a lovely story as are all of Rosie
Goodwin’s books. Shame about the irritation of the narrator stressing words in inappropriate places, as though she does not understand the use of punctuation.
