The New York Times best seller.

Meet the Sorenson Family.

Marilyn has somehow fallen into motherhood and spent four decades married to

David, who's pretty certain he loves her more than anyone has ever loved another person.

Wendy, their eldest, a cause for concern, soothes herself with drink after being widowed young,

while Violet, lawyer-turned-stay-at-home-mother, is disturbed by the reappearance of a son placed for adoption 15 years earlier.

Liza, a professor, is pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves

and Grace, their dawdling youngest daughter, lives a lie that no one in her family suspects.

Outstanding Read

I chose this randomly as I fancied something a bit different, and was hooked from the start. I loved getting to know each character and the emotional rollercoaster of their stories. It’s a gentle listen to get lost in, not a fast paced action thriller. Some laugh out loud moments and some deeply sad moments, it was a joy to listen to.

This story enveloped me ......

I loved every sentence of this book! The characters are so well drawn and realistic. The narrator, Laurel Lefkow, is wonderful at bringing the characters to life with her clever voice changes and accents. Thank you Claire Lombardo for writing such an expansive, interesting, beautiful story.

Listened to this twice and loved it

A wonderful look at an American family with a captivating narrative that allows multiple points of views, giving all characters full depth and range. Loved how the intricacies of complex family dynamics evolves, slowly reveals, and a realistic, clever take on sibling rivalry (that you may not even see coming). Loved the voice narration, overall, enough to listen to in long journey in car with husband's first listen, and my second. Was able to pinpoint some parts of the story again and ponder the whole. Great writing. A real talent.

Enjoyed listening

Confusing at the beginning with all the different characters and jumping timelines, I needed to look up online who was who, however it was a good story about relationships and families.

Slow start but a satisfying drama about family relationships

Well observed and gripping despite a slow start. Would recommend to others especially those interested in sister relationships.

How one couples best efforts can be so differently felt by those close to them

Four kids is a lot, I’d expect some backlash from having so many girls under one roof. I don’t think I could have foreseen this broods issues however.
What I felt was different about this book was how a supposedly good relationship can affect so negatively on the kids. There was a running theme of how could we ever live up to or expect or deserve a life so cushy as their parents and how delusional the girls saw their mother. Which I thought was undeserved and out of place.
A good read overall and I liked the depth of characters, I was keen to see how it all panned out.

Nice but long

The story is nice enough in places but that’s all I could call it, it’s just so long and not gripping. One to dip in and out whilst doing jobs.
