About this listen

In recent years, the common perception of the Neanderthals has been transformed, thanks to new discoveries and paradigm-shattering scientific innovations. It turns out that the Neanderthals' behavior was surprisingly modern: they buried the dead, cared for the sick, hunted large animals in their prime, harvested seafood, and communicated with spoken language. Meanwhile, advances in DNA technologies are compelling us to reassess the Neanderthals' place in our own past.

For hundreds of thousands of years, Neanderthals evolved in Europe parallel to Homo sapiens evolving in Africa, and, when both species made their first forays into Asia, the Neanderthals may even have had the upper hand. In this important volume, Dimitra Papagianni and Michael A. Morse compile the first full chronological narrative of the Neanderthals' dramatic existence - from their evolution in Europe to their expansion to Siberia, their subsequent extinction, and ultimately their revival in popular novels, cartoons, cult movies, and television commercials.

A fantastic overview of the historical record of Neanderthals (so far)

I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of the book; it’s both informative and interesting, and not bogged down with long anecdotes from the author.

Also, very well read.

Excellent from start to finish.

Very wide coverage if the subject in an objective way. Why did Neandertal man go extinct - its of options and probably not just one pressure that triggered an extinction. Really enjoyed it.

I have read a number of books on early hominoids - this is amongst the best

Really interesting book and so much to take in. It is excellent for the expert but is written in such a way that it is understandable and interesting to the layman. I found it fascinating and learnt so much and I shall read it again to glean more from it. It is nice to see the attitude to Neanderthals is changing at long last. I am so glad I downloaded this book.

A keeper

I really enjoyed this book, I got it on a whim and I am glad I did. The Authors were able to explain the subject without talking down.

It was interesting and informative

Interesting and informative. It clearly dispels the urban myths and is frank about the difficulties in drawing conclusions from what little evidence exists. It seems that an update to this book in 10 years time would be even more interesting.

Very interesting
